Speaking at a hearing on May 7 in the US Department of Justice 's lawsuit against Alphabet, Google's parent company, Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of services, said AI technology is developing at a very fast pace and will create major changes in just the next 10 years.

“It sounds crazy, but you won’t need an iPhone in 10 years,” Cue said. According to MacRumors , the Apple VP may be referring to how AI is likely to evolve in the coming years, with the prospect of wearables incorporating intuitive AI functionality replacing traditional smartphones.

However, if this becomes true, it will be a major "disaster" for Apple itself. The iPhone is still the main source of revenue for Apple and so far the company has not found the next big product that can replace it.

Previous efforts, such as Apple’s electric car project and its first virtual reality glasses, have been canceled or have not sold well. Apple is focusing on robotics, while continuing to pursue wearable projects that could replace the iPhone.

According to market research firm Counterpoint Research , one in three smartphones sold this year will be equipped with generative AI (Gen AI), bringing total estimated sales to 400 million units.

This rate is much higher than in 2024, when 5 smartphones sold have Gen AI.

“These features are becoming standard on high-end smartphones, and will rapidly expand to the mid-range segment from 2025,” said a report from Counterpoint Research .

Smartphone makers are likely to ramp up their Gen AI marketing in 2025. However, not all will benefit equally. Apple and Samsung are expected to dominate the early Gen AI smartphone market, thanks to their existing recognition in the premium segment and developed markets.

“Both brands are investing heavily in Gen AI with Apple Intelligence and Galaxy AI. They will continue to expand AI capabilities through regular software updates and phased deployments for new use cases in 2025,” said analysts from Counterpoint Research .
