Singapore impresses in Asian Cup qualifiers

The Singapore team had a convincing performance after two matches in Group C of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Singapore had an important victory over Bangladesh.

On June 10, Singapore won 2-1 away against Bangladesh, thanks to goals from Song Ui-young and Ikhsan Fandi. Notably, Bangladesh's squad included former Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury and Shamit Shome, who has played twice for Canada.

In the first 45 minutes, Singapore created several chances despite facing a fierce home team. The away team ended the first half with a 1-goal advantage thanks to Song Ui-young in the 45th minute.

Early in the second half, Ikhsan Fandi scored Singapore's second goal, after a failed save by Bangladesh goalkeeper Marma. Despite conceding two goals, the home team did not give up and pressed for an equalizer. However, they could only score one goal thanks to Hossain in the 67th minute with a tricky shot from Choudhury's pass.

In the final minutes, Bangladesh had an unfortunate header that hit the crossbar, but Singapore stood firm to bring home 3 valuable points.

Before this match, Singapore drew 0-0 with Hong Kong in the first round in March, while Bangladesh had a goalless draw with India.

Singapore have never qualified directly for the Asian Cup. Their only appearance was in 1984 when they hosted the tournament. Singapore will continue their qualifying campaign with a tough match against India at home in October.

Ho Tung Han was fouled in Singapore. After conceding a goal in the 77th minute of the match between Balestier Khalsa and Geylang on March 7, goalkeeper Ho Tung Han of U22 Vietnam was pushed down in the goal by an opposing player.
