According to the Ministry of Health, during the week of April 19-25, the country recorded 3,942 additional suspected measles cases, down 4.3% compared to the previous week (the previous week had 4,122 cases). Since the beginning of 2025, the country has recorded 81,691 sporadic suspected measles cases in 63 provinces and cities. Compared to the time with the highest number of cases, the number of cases recorded during the week has decreased by 30%.

The representative of the Ministry of Health stated that the number of measles cases nationwide has tended to stagnate in recent weeks; most of the provinces with increased cases are in the Northern region from the beginning of 2025 to present (2024 had a very low number of cases). The number of cases in the remaining regions has basically stagnated and the increasing trend is not as clear as before.

Accordingly, after the end of the measles vaccination campaign, the age of measles has begun to change by age group. Specifically, compared to the first 3 months of 2025, among the current measles cases, the group over 10 years old (accounting for 31.3%) has shown signs of increasing; while the group from over 1 year old to 10 years old has decreased, the group under 1 year old has also decreased slightly...

Most provinces and cities have urgently developed plans, organized local implementation, and mobilized the participation and support of local departments and authorities in reviewing subjects and organizing implementation.

To date, 54/54 provinces and cities have completed vaccination for 777,451/806,267 subjects, reaching 96.4%; of which 52/54 provinces achieved a vaccination rate of over 95% (meeting the planned target); 2/54 provinces have a high vaccination rate of 90-95%.

Faced with the current measles epidemic, the health sector has implemented many drastic measures to prevent the epidemic. In particular, the Ministry of Health has issued a Plan to implement the 3rd measles vaccination campaign in 2025.

Regarding the vaccine supply situation, the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology has allocated 451,700 doses of the first batch of vaccine to the regional Institutes of Hygiene and Epidemiology and Pasteur Institutes for distribution to provinces and cities to organize vaccination. Up to now, the provinces and cities have been developing local plans according to the guidance of the Ministry of Health to organize the campaign according to the above plan; at the same time, directing medical facilities to strengthen medical examination and treatment and infection control.

The representative of the Ministry of Health also stated that although the epidemic situation has shown signs of easing, there are still many challenges. In particular, the awareness of a part of the population is still limited, leading to a fear of vaccination. In addition, the number of grassroots medical staff is still low, making the implementation difficult.

The Ministry of Health has requested the People's Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities, the Institutes of Hygiene and Epidemiology, and the Pasteur Institute to strengthen direction on disease prevention and control during the transitional season.

To strengthen vaccination work, the Ministry of Health requested the Department of Health of provinces and cities to urge and accelerate the organization of the third measles vaccination campaign, completing the first vaccination before April 30, 2025, and the second before May 15, 2025.

The units also proactively coordinate closely with media agencies, newspapers and grassroots media systems to update information on the epidemic situation and disease prevention recommendations for people; strengthen communication to encourage and mobilize families and parents to take their children for full and timely vaccination.
