Traffic accidents lurk on National Highway 1 through Hue City after historic floods

After the recent historic floods, the road surface of many sections of National Highway 1 (QL1) through Hue City, nearly 110km long, appeared to be degraded and severely damaged, with hundreds of potholes appearing, causing unsafe conditions for people and vehicles.

Everyone feels insecure.

Mr. Bui Van Chuong (residing in Nghe An province), who has been driving passenger vans for more than 15 years, said that these past few days, when transporting passengers from Nghe An to Da Nang , through Hue City, it took him 45 minutes longer than before. "Because after the days of rain and floods, hundreds of dangerous potholes appeared on National Highway 1 through Hue City, so there were many sections where vehicles were driving at very slow speeds.

Authorities inspect damaged areas on National Highway 1 through Hue City.

Worryingly, many bus routes mainly run at night, while there are many sections where the street lights are not bright enough, so just a little carelessness can easily lead to an accident," Mr. Chuong added. Ms. Nguyen Thao Nhu said that after nearly a week off to visit her hometown in Ha Tinh , on the evening of November 7, she returned to Da Nang to go to work. When the bus passed through Hue, there were many places where the bus was constantly pulled, making her and most of the passengers on the bus very tired, nauseous and most worried about an accident happening.

According to the CAND Newspaper's reporter on the morning of November 8, after the prolonged flood from the end of October 2025 until now, many sections of National Highway 1 through Hue City have peeled off and seriously collapsed, posing a potential risk to traffic safety. On the road sections through the communes and wards in the North of Hue City such as Phong Thai, Phong Dien, Huong Tra, Kim Tra, many locations have potholes, making it very difficult for vehicles to move. For example, on the Hue City bypass, especially the section passing through house number 90 Kim Phung Street (Kim Tra Ward), the road surface has many potholes, patches, stretching hundreds of meters. In addition, along the route there are many small damaged spots, causing difficulties for traffic participants.

Not only in the northern area of Hue City, National Highway 1 through the southern communes such as Phu Loc, Chan May - Lang Co also suffered similar conditions after the flood. Right in front of the headquarters of the Fire Fighting and Rescue Team of Area 7 (Fire Fighting and Rescue Police Department of Hue City Police), there were many holes about 2m long, nearly 20cm deep, exposing the deformed and severely damaged road surface structure.

Living next to National Highway 1, Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Tuyet (residing in Phu Loc commune, Hue city) said that the 500m long road in front of her shop appears deep holes and subsidence every year during the rainy season. Every time a large vehicle passes by, rocks from the holes are thrown straight into the house, making the local people very upset. Many rudimentary vehicles traveling at night are prone to accidents when they hit deep holes due to poor visibility.

Need to promptly and thoroughly repair damaged areas

After directly inspecting the scene of the entire damaged National Highway 1 after prolonged rain and floods, Mr. Hoang Hai Minh, Vice Chairman of Hue City People's Committee, has just requested functional units to urgently put up warning signs, arrange for police to regulate vehicle speed, and operate the lighting system from 5 p.m. every day to ensure traffic safety at night.

The leaders of the City People's Committee also requested localities along the route to strengthen propaganda, remind people to participate in traffic carefully, avoid unfortunate accidents; request Trung Phuong Company Limited (BOT investor), Phuoc Tuong Joint Stock Company, Phu Gia BOT, Road Management Office II.5... to take advantage of the clear weather, promptly organize to thoroughly fix damaged and inadequate locations to ensure smooth and safe traffic for people.

Lieutenant Colonel Phan Bao Trung, Deputy Head of the Traffic Police Department of Hue City Police, said that due to the deterioration of National Highway 1, the Traffic Police force has increased patrols, warnings and reminders for people and vehicle owners to move slowly and ensure safety when traveling through sections with potholes. The unit also requested road management and maintenance units to promptly carry out repairs and fixes when the weather is sunny, and at the same time, add warning signs, stretch ropes and install reflective lights at damaged areas to ensure traffic safety for people.

The representative of Road Management Area II said that the unit is currently using suitable materials to temporarily patch and patch damaged areas to create a flat, smooth surface for vehicles to travel. When the weather is dry, the maximum number of human resources, equipment, and overtime will be mobilized to thoroughly handle the entire damaged road surface, ensuring safety and prolonging the life of the road.

According to the Road Management Area II, the North Central region, especially Hue City, is often affected by prolonged heavy rains, so potholes occur frequently. The unit has asked maintenance contractors to proactively research and test new materials and technologies to increase road surface durability in adverse weather conditions.

However, the current measures are still only temporary, "potholes" after being patched usually only remain stable for 1-2 days, then continue to pop up again. To overcome this situation, the authorities are continuing to review and propose more sustainable technical solutions, while maintaining a permanent force to patrol, inspect and promptly handle damaged locations to ensure traffic safety on National Highway 1 through Hue City.
