Painful confession of a gym teacher with terminal breast cancer

Even though I tried to control myself, I could not read the last line of the petition filled with painful thoughts about the unfortunate life and love for her little daughter of Ms. Le Thi Hue (born in 1983, residing in Bao Thang district, Lao Cai province).

Emaciated and exhausted, Ms. Hue lay motionless on the hospital bed of Internal Medicine Department 5, Tan Trieu K Hospital. The 40-year-old woman's face was swollen, her skin was pale and flabby, and many dark spots had appeared... The cancer had reached the metastatic stage, it had devastated this woman's body terribly, but still could not erase all the delicate features of her youth.

Putting her hands on the hospital bed, she struggled to sit up and whispered: "These past few days I've been in so much pain, I can't stand up, and we don't have any money at home, so I didn't intend to go to the hospital. But the teachers at school kept encouraging me and pooled money to bring me here...".

Pausing for a moment to catch her breath, Ms. Hue continued telling us about her unfortunate life. Through her story, it seemed that this woman, only 40 years old, had experienced all the suffering and bitterness in the world.

Originally from Nam Dinh province, Ms. Hue lost her father at the age of 15. Pitying her mother who had to work hard to raise three children on her own, Ms. Hue tried to overcome all difficulties to both study and earn a living. With much effort, the poor village girl became a physical education teacher at an elementary school in Bao Thang district, Lao Cai province.

In 2008, Ms. Hue got married, and in 2009, she gave birth to a daughter, Nguyen Le Anh Thu. It seemed that happiness had smiled on the young teacher who had suffered many disadvantages, but the joy was short-lived, life's hardships gave rise to irreconcilable conflicts, and only 3 years after the wedding, the couple went their separate ways.

Overcoming the shock of marriage, in 2011 the single mother took her little daughter back to live with her mother. In addition to her job at the elementary school, Ms. Hue took on other jobs such as sewing, packing goods..., hoping to have a little extra money to cover her living expenses.

Being naturally beautiful, even though there were many men in the area pursuing her, the single woman remained steadfast in her choice. She tried to work hard, hoping to give all the best to her beloved daughter and to show filial piety to her elderly mother.

But once again, misfortune struck this woman, pushing her to the brink of pain. In mid-2019, Ms. Hue felt chest pain, difficulty breathing, and weight loss. She went to the doctor and the results showed that she had breast cancer.

Ms. Hue choked up as she recounted that when her breast cancer was discovered, it was already at a very advanced stage, with cancer cells metastasizing to many parts of her body. The pain was so intense that it tore her flesh and skin apart, and at times, Ms. Hue thought: I don't know how much longer I have left in this world!

After nearly half a year of "hospital being home", Ms. Hue's condition temporarily improved and she returned to her daily work. But shortly after, the pain flared up again, forcing Ms. Hue to be hospitalized again.

Alone and without money, when the pain eased a little, Ms. Hue asked to be discharged from the hospital and return home. Falling into misery, for a long time the poor single woman held on to her life with herbal medicine packages.

Suffering from a serious illness and not being treated properly, from a beautiful woman, the terrible disease has turned Ms. Hue into an emaciated patient, her body shriveled to less than 40 kg. The illness is getting worse day by day, if she does not continue to go to the hospital for treatment, Ms. Hue's life is only counted by days.

"Many times I think her fate is like that, there's no point in holding on. But thinking about the day when Anh Thu no longer has a mother, I can't bear it. She's too young, how can she live alone!...", Ms. Hue sobbed.

Pained at the thought of her little daughter being orphaned, at the end of 2021, Ms. Hue asked relatives to borrow up to 190 million VND to go to the hospital to continue to hold on to life.

The money she brought was just a drop in the ocean, the cancer that Ms. Hue was suffering from had reached a serious stage. She had to use special medicines with extremely expensive prices. So after only a few months, the debt Ms. Hue had to shoulder was a huge number. Unable to find money anywhere, she had to return home, embracing the pain and accepting the cruelty of fate.

Many times it seemed like death had "called her name", but her little daughter's cries for her mother pulled her back.

Talking to Dan Tri reporter, Doctor Dong Chi Kien, Department of Internal Medicine 5 said that patient Le Thi Hue was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer with multifocal bone metastases and symptoms. Due to the condition of bone damage in many locations requiring pain relief, the patient was prescribed chemotherapy, followed by maintenance with endocrine drugs and drugs to slow down the bone destruction process, with a long-term treatment costing about 50 million VND/month.

"It is known that Ms. Hue is a single mother raising a young child in a very difficult situation. Her treatment will have to be prolonged, and her family lives far away, making travel expensive... That is why the patient cannot follow the standard treatment regimen and only uses part of the prescription as prescribed, making treatment very difficult.
