Recently, in Quang Ngai city, the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province coordinated with sponsors to organize the program "Lighting up the sea with fishermen". The goal of the program is to respond to the resolutions of the Party and the Action Program of the Government to join hands to remove the "yellow card" IUU for the Vietnamese seafood industry. Build a sustainable fisheries development and motivate fishermen to continue to stick to the sea to preserve the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.
The program "Lighting up the sea with fishermen" is a meaningful and practical activity that contributes to improving the effectiveness of propaganda, support, assistance and protection activities for fishermen to feel secure in exploiting the seas, promoting the role and presence of fishermen, each ship going to sea is a "sovereignty landmark", each fisherman is a "Border Guard soldier" at sea, contributing with the army and people of the whole country to protect the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.
At the ceremony, 200 gifts were given to fishermen. Each gift is worth more than 5 million VND, including: batteries, LED bulbs, medicine bags, "Things to know about fishing" handbook, eagle battery combo box, specialized rope roll and a 1 million VND voucher.
In addition, the program "Lighting up the sea with fishermen" also awarded 25 scholarships to students from fishing families who have overcome difficulties and studied well, each scholarship worth 2 million VND. At the same time, an additional special scholarship worth 5 million VND was awarded to a student with difficult circumstances and the highest English score, and 5 tablets with learning tools were awarded to 5 students who have overcome difficulties and studied well in the locality.
Mr. Tran Phuoc Hien, Vice Chairman of Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee, said: Quang Ngai province currently has 4,212 registered fishing vessels, of which 3,086 are offshore fishing vessels, with the output of exploited aquatic products in 2023 reaching 273,198 tons. The production value of the aquatic products industry in 2023 will reach more than 7,255 billion VND, accounting for 38.5% of the total production value of the agricultural sector and is identified as the province's key economic sector.
Currently, the government, people and fishermen of Quang Ngai are making great efforts and achieving some positive results in the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the province, striving together with the whole country to remove the "yellow card" warning of the European Commission (EC) on Vietnam's fishing.
