Creating momentum for traditional professions

In recent times, traditional crafts such as brocade weaving, bamboo and rattan weaving, wine making, driftwood and ornamental stone crafting, etc. have not only preserved the beauty of national culture, but also created economic value and brought income to the people. For sustainable development, in addition to preserving and improving the skills of craftsmen, the province and localities have had many measures to support capital, equipment, advertising and trade promotion so that products can reach large markets inside and outside the province.

Brocade products of Com hamlet, Dong Lai commune (Tan Lac) have good designs and quality, and are well received by the market.

The traditional brocade weaving profession in Com hamlet, Dong Lai commune (Tan Lac) has existed for a long time. In the past, the profession was lost, some households removed the loom to use as firewood, many people were no longer interested in the profession. Thanks to the love of the profession of some craftsmen, along with support from local authorities and programs, in 2023, the Dong Lai Commune Traditional Brocade Weaving and Service Cooperative was established, currently with 54 members. Weaving during the off-season has become a favorite job and brings income to the women. Long-time craftsmen are willing to share their experiences on how to weave each pattern and brocade weaving skills. In 2024, the cooperative's brocade weaving products will receive a 3-star OCOP certificate at the provincial level.

Ms. Bui Thi Mia, Deputy Director of the Traditional Brocade Weaving and Service Cooperative of Dong Lai Commune, said: "The brocade weaving profession of the Muong people has existed for hundreds of years, but has gradually faded away. With the awareness of preserving the national cultural identity, I and a number of dedicated weavers have determined to stick with it and find ways to restore the profession. Currently, the cooperative has over 70 looms, and at any time of the year, there are products to supply to customers. The products are elaborately crafted into fabric panels, skirt waistbands, and skirts as desired. The cooperative's products are completely handmade, so the craftsmen must be meticulous and delicate in the weaving process to be able to create brilliant fabrics, elaborate motifs, beautiful patterns, and rich national identity."

The traditional rattan and bamboo weaving craft with its sophisticated and unique features on each product has at times encountered many difficulties, seemingly unable to survive. Thanks to the perseverance and efforts of each craftsman, as well as the support and facilitation of all levels of government, the rattan and bamboo weaving craft has gradually gained a foothold and is favored by many consumers. Up to now, the rattan and bamboo weaving craft has developed in both scale and value. Notably, the traditional rattan and bamboo weaving craft cooperative in Bui hamlet, Nhan Nghia commune (Lac Son) currently creates jobs for 200 local workers, including more than 100 regular workers; each seasonal worker also has an income of 2.5 - 3 million VND/month. The cooperative operates effectively, its products are diverse in design and guaranteed in quality. The cooperative receives many orders from provinces, cities and foreign markets such as China and Japan. In addition, in the communes of Vu Binh, Van Nghia, Van Son (Lac Son)... concentrated production facilities have also been formed, attracting many local workers.

In the province, there are many typical traditional occupations, recognized as craft villages, some of which have established cooperatives, creating a solid position in the market such as producing rice wine, driftwood, and making ornamental stones... Many occupations have developed products that meet OCOP standards, creating jobs for rural workers, achieving socio -economic development goals and building new rural areas. Thanks to the support of Party committees, authorities, associations and unions, traditional occupation training courses, trade connections, and product promotion are regularly organized, opening up opportunities for rural workers to access jobs.

Provincial authorities have also strengthened monitoring and evaluation of product quality, ensuring traditional values combined with innovation in line with market trends. However, many industries still face many difficulties such as: small-scale, fragmented production, rudimentary equipment; lack of proactive consumption market; high cost compared to industrial products; limited ability of workers to create new designs and models, keeping up with modern trends... Therefore, more attention is needed from all levels and sectors to preserve and promote traditional crafts, not only to preserve the national cultural identity but also to contribute to effective economic restructuring, gradually reduce poverty, and stabilize income for people.
