Working group of the Department of Agriculture and Environment inspected rice production in Thu Thua district
Pests and diseases increase
By the end of May 2025, farmers across the province had sown 208,307 hectares of HT rice , reaching 95.9% of the plan. The early sown areas have entered the tillering - panicle formation stage, and farmers are focusing on care.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment - Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh said: "The Department directs localities to shift their focus to rice care, paying special attention to irrigation water and fertilizer management. In the current weather conditions, fertilization needs to be balanced, limiting nitrogen, increasing potassium to make plants strong and healthy, reducing pests and diseases. The Department also notes that it is necessary to follow the "4 rights" recommendations when spraying pesticides, absolutely do not spray indiscriminately when the harmful threshold has not yet been reached."
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, last week, the area of pests on rice increased compared to the previous week, in which, the areas of pests such as leaf blast, alum poisoning, brown planthoppers, thrips and stem borers increased significantly. In particular, the area of rats and golden apple snails on rice at the seedling and tillering stages decreased.
Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Tran Thi Mong Thi informed: "The Department has sent technical staff to closely follow the fields, instructing farmers to monitor young brown planthoppers and rice blast disease during the rice seedling - tillering stage. With brown planthoppers, only when the density exceeds 2,000 individuals/m² need to be treated with biological drugs. Particularly for rice blast disease, it is necessary to pay attention to reasonable fertilization, do not apply nitrogen fertilizer when the weather is cloudy or the rice is sick; at the same time, spray the drug at the right time and concentration".
In the past, when pests and diseases appeared, they were treated, but now farmers are more aware and proactively prevent them from the beginning of the season.
Thu Thua district has completed sowing HT rice 2025. Mr. Tran Van Nhon (Long Thuan commune, Thu Thua district) is cultivating 5 hectares of IR4625 sticky rice, sharing: “This year, I proactively applied organic microbial fertilizer, reduced nitrogen, increased potassium from the beginning of the crop. The rice grew well, tillered evenly, and had fewer pests and diseases. Every week, I visit the field, and when I see planthoppers, I immediately start treating them instead of letting them break out like in previous crops. Thanks to the guidance of technical staff, I know how to choose the right medicine at the right time, so I save costs and get high efficiency.”
Mr. Nguyen Van Hiep (Vinh Thuan commune, Vinh Hung district) said: "Farmers in the area are familiar with high-quality production, so care is very important. Everyone tries to take good care of the fields, from watering to fertilizing and spraying according to recommendations. We hope the weather will be favorable for the rice to grow well and achieve high yields."
For the Summer-Fall crop to be successful
Farmers take care of rice
In general, up to this point, HT rice areas in the province have grown well, with few serious pests. However, from June onwards will be a sensitive period, prone to neck blast and grain sterility if weather conditions are unfavorable. Therefore, the provincial Department of Agriculture recommends that localities complete sowing before June 25, 2025 to ensure uniformity in the crop and favorable conditions for pest and disease control.
At the same time, the provincial Department of Agriculture also encourages farmers to continue using high-quality, short- and medium-term rice varieties such as Dai Thom 8, OM5451, OM18, etc. to suit weather conditions and ensure output.
Ms. Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh emphasized: “The Department hopes that localities will strengthen coordination between agricultural extension, plant protection and local authorities to provide timely support to farmers. In particular, it is necessary to organize short-term training courses and provide technical guidance right in the fields so that farmers can easily absorb and apply effectively. The goal is to ensure productivity and quality, gradually moving towards sustainable production”./.
