The ship "Academician Oparin" collected nearly 17,000 marine biological samples for research.

On May 28, at the Institute of Oceanography (Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province), the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences, Far Eastern Branch (FEBRAS) held a workshop to summarize the roadmap for marine research cooperation in the period 2018-2025.

According to the report at the workshop, in the past 8 years, the survey ship “Academician Oparin” has conducted 4 joint surveys at 474 stations from North to South, including outpost island areas, collecting nearly 17,000 marine biological samples. These samples serve the research on biodiversity and bioactive substances in Vietnam’s seas.

Marine scientific research is a traditional area of cooperation between VAST and FEBRAS. Over the past 20 years (2005-2025), the two sides have conducted 10 joint surveys, including 9 surveys on marine biodiversity and biochemistry using the ship “Academician Oparin” in Vietnamese waters.

Over the past 10 years, more than 20 young scientists from VAST’s specialized institutes have come to Russia to study and conduct research. The two sides have jointly published 64 scientific works, including 33 articles in international journals in the ISI list, 3 monographs and many other scientific articles.

Prof. Academician Chau Van Minh, President of VAST, affirmed that the surveys have created a comprehensive set of documents on environmental conditions, biodiversity potential and bioactive substances in Vietnam's seas, providing an important scientific basis for sustainable marine management, exploitation and conservation.

In particular, during the 9th survey from May 1 to 25, 2025, the ship "Academician Oparin" collected an additional 6,500 biological samples and 2,500 environmental samples in the southern sea. The collected data will be used to analyze marine pollution, the presence of microplastics, persistent organic compounds and build a remote sensing database for environmental monitoring and aquaculture development.
