During the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, the number of people entering and leaving China’s ports of entry is expected to be similar to 2019, the pre-pandemic period. With the country reaching a visa-free agreement with 23 countries, this year’s Lunar New Year is expected to see “the hottest outbound travel season in five years.”
According to Chinese government regulations, this year, Chinese workers will have 8 days off from February 10-17 (ie the 1st to the 8th day of the Lunar New Year). With this holiday schedule, many units are allowed to arrange flexible work schedules so that workers can have an extra day off before New Year's Eve, ie the 30th of the Lunar New Year, so this year Chinese people will have up to 9 days off.

The long holidays have boosted demand for overseas travel in the country of a billion people, which had been suppressed during the pandemic. Data from travel platform Ly.com shows that searches for flight tickets departing from February 8-17 have nearly doubled compared to the same period last year, of which international flight tickets have increased nearly 7 times, surpassing 2019.
Meanwhile, according to the 2024 Lunar New Year tourism market forecast report released by China's major travel booking platform Ctrip, short- and medium-distance overseas tours, such as Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia, are the top choices, with hot destinations including Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, South Korea, New Zealand and Vietnam.
Ms. Shen Jiani, a senior researcher at a travel platform in China, commented: “Looking at the search index, the hotness of searching for airline tickets and hotels in the overseas travel market during the 2024 Spring Festival has surpassed the same period in 2019. In terms of booking volume, overseas travel orders have even increased more than 10 times compared to the same period last year. Overall, this year's overseas travel hotel market is predicted to be the hottest in the past 5 years.”
According to a forecast released on February 4 by the National Immigration Administration (NIA), this year’s Lunar New Year, international border gates across the country will welcome a large number of domestic and foreign tourists. The average number of international arrivals per day is expected to reach 1.8 million, about 3.3 times higher than last year’s Lunar New Year and equivalent to 2019.
