Thailand "launches a trick" to attract international airlines, turning the country into a global tourism center

About 30 airlines have signed up to participate in the four-day “Air-mazing Thailand” program of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Under the program, TAT will send airline representatives on two field trips to inspect airports. The first route will cover Chiang Mai and U-Tapao international airports, while the second will focus on Krabi, Surat Thani and Samui airports.

Thailand currently has 39 airports, including 10 international airports: Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang - Chiang Rai, Krabi, Phuket, U-Tapao, Hat Yai, Surat Thani and Samui.

The program, which runs from April 2-5, will complement the government's policy to promote tourism in second-tier provinces and make Thailand a global tourism hub, said Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsupakijkosol.

Ms. Sudawan expressed hope that international airlines will see the true potential of Thai airports in the post-Covid-19 pandemic era and consider opening more routes to the Land of Golden Pagodas, including first- and second-tier provinces.

"The three major airports of Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang and Phuket are currently overcrowded in terms of both passengers and flights, so Thai authorities are aiming to distribute international visitors, both contributing to tourism revenue for other provinces and reducing congestion at airports in major cities," the Thai Minister of Tourism and Sports emphasized.

* Previously, the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports also announced that it would allocate 50 million Baht (equivalent to 1.4 million USD) from the budget to implement health insurance to support foreign tourists in 2024.

Accordingly, foreign tourists coming to Thailand will be covered by medical insurance of up to 500,000 Baht (equivalent to 14,000 USD) in case of an accident in Thailand and receive compensation of up to 1 million Baht (equivalent to 28,000 USD) in case of death.

This is a new campaign by the Thai government to ensure the safety of tourists and increase the attractiveness of the Land of Golden Pagodas.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand said that the budget of 50 million Baht will be used for emergency expenses to finance this campaign, ensuring that tourists are well taken care of during their stay in the Land of Golden Pagodas from January 1 to August 31 this year.

However, tourists will not be covered if the incident results from personal negligence, or from intentionally engaging in dangerous or illegal activities in the country.
