Thai Nguyen - Bac Kan: Traffic connection is ready

The new Thai Nguyen province was formed from the merger of Thai Nguyen and Bac Kan provinces according to Resolution No. 60-NQ/TW, covering an area of ​​over 8,300km2 and a population of over 1.68 million people. With its strategic location as the northern gateway to Hanoi, the new Thai Nguyen province plays an important role in the East-West economic corridor and links the Northern Midlands and Mountains.

In recent years, Thai Nguyen province has invested heavily in the transport sector. In the photo: The road connecting Thai Nguyen - Bac Giang - Vinh Phuc provinces is being accelerated for completion.

With focused investment in the transport sector over the past years, Thai Nguyen province has a synchronous, modern and connected internal and external transport system. In particular, after merging with Bac Kan , Thai Nguyen province will possess a diverse intra-provincial transport network, including national highways, provincial roads, expressways and waterways.

Among the 22 key traffic routes in the area, there are many routes that directly connect Thai Nguyen and Bac Kan, belonging to key economic corridors, namely: National Highway 3 (QL3) - Thai Nguyen - Bac Kan route. This route plays a particularly important role connecting the administrative center of Thai Nguyen with Bac Kan.

The second route is the Thai Nguyen - Cho Moi expressway with a length of 30km, connecting Thai Nguyen City - Cho Moi (Bac Kan). This route helps shorten travel time and enhance logistics between industrial parks in Thai Nguyen and Bac Kan.

Highway 3C from Deo So (Dinh Hoa) to Bang Lung town (Cho Don) is about 30km long. This is the route connecting the tourist area of ​​ATK Dinh Hoa (Thai Nguyen) with ATK Cho Don, Ba Be Lake (Bac Kan) and is the main route for transporting goods to Cho Don district and vice versa.

The effective national and provincial highway system connecting Thai Nguyen and Bac Kan includes National Highway 3 and the Thai Nguyen - Cho Moi Expressway; the routes supporting the East - West economic corridor, serving the transportation of goods and tourism.

However, National Highway 3, 345km long, starting from Hanoi (old Duong bridge) through Thai Nguyen, Bac Kan and ending at Ta Lung border gate (Cao Bang), has deteriorated after many years of operation.

Along with the investment in repairing this route, in mid-March 2025, the Ministry of Construction started the Cho Moi - Bac Kan Expressway Construction Investment Project with a total route length of about 28.8km. Of which, the expressway is about 28.4km long, the section connecting to National Highway 3B and connecting to Bac Kan - Ba Be Lake road is 0.4km long. The project has a total investment of over 5,750 billion VND (from the state budget).

The Cho Moi - Bac Kan expressway is designed according to TCVN 5729:2012 standards, speed 80km/h, with 4 lanes, roadbed width is 22m. The project implementation period is 24 months, ensuring basic completion in 2026. After completion, the Cho Moi - Bac Kan expressway will connect with the Thai Nguyen - Cho Moi, Hanoi - Thai Nguyen routes to ensure synchronization in scale, gradually completing the expressway connecting the capital Hanoi with the midland and mountainous provinces of the North, shortening travel time from Thai Nguyen - Bac Kan and vice versa. The project contributes to creating a connected and unified traffic network with the road system in the region as well as with neighboring provinces...

Looking at the overall traffic system in Thai Nguyen province after merging with Bac Kan province, it can be seen that the roads have been invested in relatively synchronously, playing a driving role in promoting economic development, connecting Song Cong and Yen Binh industrial parks with Ba Be and Nui Coc lake tourist areas and logistics centers.

Routes such as National Highway 3, Thai Nguyen - Cho Moi Expressway and Cau River waterway create favorable conditions for transporting goods, strongly developing industry - urban - education and training, promoting the existing economic potential of Thai Nguyen province and the potential of ecological resources, forestry, tourism and minerals of Bac Kan province.

With a larger area and population, more open development space, more labor force, more synchronous infrastructure, a more streamlined and effective apparatus, certainly the localities of Thai Nguyen province after merging with Bac Kan province will be able to promote their potentials and advantages better.
