To make ends meet, Ms. Trang still works hard at her old sewing machine, skillfully creating fashionable and affordable clothes for the neighbors to choose from. After more than 30 years of sewing, the old sewing machine has been with Ms. Trang since the beginning of her career. The broken table leg is temporarily supported by a wooden bar, so each time she sews, she has to hold it with her hand to keep it from tilting.

Ms. Trang confided: “The machine is very old, sometimes I can pedal for a few hours and the needle won’t move. But as long as it still runs, I will keep working.”

Whenever there are no customers ordering custom-made clothes, she takes on clothing repairs, sewing buttons, fixing waists, hemming… each time she only receives a few thousand, but for her, that is a way for her and her husband to continue their dream of going to school for their two children.

The eldest daughter is teaching the youngest son to read.

“My daughter is a good student, but her body is weak with a 45-degree curvature of the spine. My son is slow to remember and stutters. He was unable to learn when he was in second grade, so the family pooled money to take him to the doctor. At Ben Tre Mental Hospital, the doctor concluded that his brain was slow to develop. I was so sad when I let my child drop out of school but he couldn’t learn. Now I want to find an early intervention school for my child to go to, but the family doesn’t have the money, so I had to let him drop out,” Ms. Trang choked up.

Seeing his wife working hard from early morning to late at night, Mr. Thach Em was even more determined to row his boat a little further. Making a living on the river by setting traps to catch fish depending on the tides was not easy, especially when his health was deteriorating day by day due to many diseases such as lung disease, spinal stenosis and cervical degeneration.

Mr. Thach Em confided: “The doctor told me not to soak in water anymore, but if I don’t do it, I won’t be able to make a living. I plan to learn how to make fishing gear to make things easier and not have to go into the water, but I don’t have the capital to buy the gear yet.”

Mr. Thach Em went to unload roof tiles on the river.

The rotten boat was the only means of transport to get him to the river, yet this worker could not count how many times the boat was flooded, how many old planks he had temporarily attached to it so the boat could continue going downstream.

He worried: “This boat can only carry me. It’s difficult to get in and out these days, the water is so high, if I fall back I might lose all the fish. It takes about 5 hours to get more than a kilo of fish. My wife has recently been suffering from kidney stones and high blood pressure, without me to help, the family won’t have enough to eat.”

Ms. Trang continued: “My family has 4 members but everyone is sick. The youngest child had a fever, epilepsy, and a fast heartbeat when she was little. My eldest daughter is a good student but has a scoliosis and has difficulty sitting for long periods of time. The doctor told me to have surgery but I don’t have the money for it.”
