Defending champions Man City welcomed Leeds with a determination to win and maintain their top spot. It was no surprise that Pep Guardiola's side completely controlled the game. Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan helped the Etihad team dominate the midfield.
Gundogan scores twice to help Man City beat Leeds
Man City controlled the ball up to 84% of the time in the first half. After Erling Haaland missed a few chances, Gundogan had a shining day with a double in the 19th and 27th minutes thanks to assists from Riyad Mahrez.
Leeds struggled to keep possession in the debut match of Sam Allardyce, who replaced Javi Gracia, and the visitors' defence continued to be tormented throughout the second half by Man City's relentless attacks.
Haaland and Mahrez missed chances to increase the gap. Even when awarded a penalty in the 82nd minute, Gundogan could not complete his hat-trick due to a missed shot.
Coach Guardiola takes another step forward with Man City to defend the English championship
Despite suffering throughout the match, Leeds suddenly had hope of turning the game around with Rodrigo's goal to reduce the score to 1-2 in the 85th minute. However, coach Allardyce's team could not create a surprise at Etihad.
Despite a narrow victory in an overwhelming match, coach Guardiola can be satisfied with Man City taking all 3 points to increase the gap with second-placed team Arsenal (who will play host to Newcastle in the late match) to 4 points.
This victory is also a morale boost for Man City before the trip to Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals next week. Meanwhile, the defeat leaves Leeds still facing the risk of relegation as they are just above the "red light" group.
