On June 8, information from the Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee Office said that due to the impact of prolonged heat and lack of rain, the electricity output of hydroelectric plants in Thanh Hoa province is very low.
Along the Ma River flowing through Thanh Hoa province, there are many large hydroelectric plants, but recently many sections of the river have become dry due to heat and drought.
Thanh Hoa province currently has 17 power sources in operation, with a total capacity of 2,485.2 MW. Of these, there are 11 hydropower plants, 2 thermal power plants, 3 livelihood power plants and 1 solar power plant.
Due to the prolonged hot and dry weather, the amount of water flowing into hydroelectric reservoirs is very low, causing the electricity output of 11 hydroelectric plants to only reach 35 - 50% compared to the same period.
In addition, Unit 2 (with a capacity of 600 MW) of Nghi Son 2 Thermal Power Plant has had a technical problem since May 4, and is expected to be fixed by July, significantly affecting the power supply to the national grid.
From May to early June is the peak of the 2023 summer heat wave, so electricity consumption in Thanh Hoa province has continuously increased. The average peak hour electricity consumption in the whole province is about 1,250 - 1,300 MW, especially on June 1, the peak capacity reached 1,410 MW, exceeding the power supply capacity of the power grid system in Thanh Hoa province.
