
In particular, Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam is honored to become one of the new members in the cinema field of the Network, the first Creative City in the cinema field of Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ngo Le Van emphasized that this is another success in the journey to realize the Party and State's guidelines, policies and goals on international integration in the new situation, reviving and developing Vietnamese culture in the new era, cultural diplomacy, developing cultural industries, including the National Target Program on Cultural Development for the period 2025 - 2035, Cultural Diplomacy Strategy to 2030, Cultural Development Strategy to 2030 and Directive No. 30/CT-TTg dated August 29, 2024 of the Prime Minister on developing Vietnamese cultural industries. The Deputy Minister expressed his belief that in the process of participating in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, Ho Chi Minh City will contribute to strongly promoting the talent and creative identity of Vietnamese people.
Ambassador Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to UNESCO, was pleased to say that the organization's recognition of Ho Chi Minh City as a member of the Creative Cities Network after a very serious application review process demonstrates international recognition of the city's potential and commitment to becoming a place connecting Vietnamese cinema with international cinema, contributing effectively and responsibly to the common development of regional cinema, and working with world cinema to further promote the value of cinema for humanity.
Joining the Creative Cities Network will help Ho Chi Minh City have more opportunities to exchange ideas, knowledge and experience with other creative cities around the world, and work with other creative cities to implement international cooperation projects in the field of cinema, jointly promote the creative potential of the community, expand access to culture, thereby contributing to promoting the development of the cultural industry with the goal of contributing 7.2% to the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) by 2030.
The Creative Cities Network, established by UNESCO in 2004, is a global network to promote cooperation between cities that consider creativity as a strategic element of sustainable development in economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects. Currently, the Network includes 408 cities from over 100 countries, representing 8 creative fields including: crafts and folk arts, media arts, design, cinema, gastronomy, literature, music and architecture. The Creative Cities Network plays a pioneering role in contributing to the realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, towards building humane, inclusive and creative cities, where culture becomes the foundation for prosperity and social cohesion.
To date, Vietnam has four cities that are members of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network: Hanoi (design sector, 2019), Hoi An (crafts and folk arts sector, 2023), Da Lat (music sector, 2023) and Ho Chi Minh City (cinema sector).
