Tam Ky City, from completing new rural construction to striving for class I urban area

Tam Ky city, Quang Nam province has completed the national target program on new rural construction (NTM) in 2020. Thanks to effectively exploiting its existing potential and advantages, Tam Ky is transforming strongly, affirming its role and holding an important position in the overall development of the province.

Towards a Class I City

Mr. Nguyen Minh Nam - Vice Chairman of Tam Ky City People's Committee said: "Over 12 years of implementing the New Rural Program, with the focused leadership and direction of Party committees at all levels; the management and operation of the government and the participation of the entire political system and society, it has contributed to improving the material and spiritual life of rural people, improving the rural environment, ensuring security, improving the appearance of rural areas, raising awareness of the role of the people in the process of local socio-economic development, and increasing people's income."

Tam Ky city has 4 communes participating in the construction of new rural areas, including Tam Ngoc, Tam Thang, Tam Phu and Tam Thanh. Of which, Tam Ngoc and Tam Thang were recognized by the People's Committee of Quang Nam province as meeting new rural standards at the end of 2015; Tam Thanh was recognized as meeting the standards at the end of 2017; Tam Phu was recognized at the end of 2018 and the city completed the task of building new rural areas, which was recognized by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 474/QD-TTg dated March 29, 2021.

Implementing the New Rural Criteria for the 2022-2025 period, communes have focused on basically maintaining and improving the quality of New Rural commune criteria and building model New Rural villages.

Essential infrastructure continues to be invested in; the fields of culture, education, health, and environment have positive changes; the political system has been consolidated; social security and order have been basically maintained. The results achieved create a solid foundation for building advanced new-style rural communes and model new-style rural communes associated with urban development orientations.

In the period of 2021-2023, Tam Ky city mobilized resources for new rural construction of 195,278 million VND. Of which: state budget 26,493 million VND, central 7,071 million VND, province 13,310 million VND, city and commune 6,112 million VND. Total state budget funding combined from other projects is 129,536 million VND.

In particular, in addition to the contribution of 39,249 million VND, people also voluntarily donated land, labor days and architectural objects (fences, gates, barns, houses...).

Tam Ky always identifies that building a new rural area is a continuous, long-term process and achieving new rural standards is not the finish line. Therefore, the locality focuses on further improving the material and spiritual life of the people, especially the contents of: employment, income increase, poverty reduction, preserving and promoting the good cultural identity of the community, protecting the environment and building a bright - green - clean - beautiful rural landscape, ensuring security and order in rural areas.

Focus on developing urban agriculture

As the provincial capital of Quang Nam province, Tam Ky has a relatively small agricultural land fund of about 3,800 hectares/year. Of which, rice is 2,400 hectares, aquaculture land is 350 hectares, and other vegetable land is about 1,000 hectares.

According to Mr. Nam, currently developing high-tech agriculture, organic agriculture, green agriculture associated with eco-tourism development is a major policy and orientation that is focused on from the Central to the grassroots level and is the development goal of Tam Ky city's agriculture from now until 2030.

The locality promotes the application of science and technology, aiming at developing smart ecological agriculture, adapting to climate change and sustainable development; increasing added value, prioritizing key products with advantages and according to the product needs of society.

Promote the development of trade - services, agricultural tourism, production linkage models according to value chains and effectively implement crop conversion; improve the quality of human resources in rural areas; promote thinking about agricultural economic development and agricultural entrepreneurship.

In recent years, Tam Ky has formed many high-tech agricultural production models such as: growing hydroponic vegetables in greenhouses; successfully cultivating cordyceps mushrooms; applying technology in the production model of lingzhi mushrooms and abalone mushrooms; applying solar energy in the fish sauce production process in Tam Thanh....

In addition, the city's budget has supported the formation of a number of concentrated production areas such as: 94 hectares of high-quality rice (in Tam Thang, An Phu, Tam Phu); 12 hectares of organic rice (Hoa Thuan, Tam Phu); testing 10 hectares of new rice varieties adapted to climate change in Tam Thang; 4 hectares of vegetable and fruit areas and 23 hectares of fruit trees in Tam Ngoc associated with the development of Ca Ban Village tourism; 25 hectares of lotus to serve the development of Dam River tourism....

Implementing the orientation of building Tam Ky city to basically meet the criteria of a type I urban area by 2025 and to build a green and smart urban area by 2030, the City People's Committee aims to maintain and improve standards according to the set of criteria "City completing the task of building new rural areas" in the period of 2021-2025; 2 communes meeting the model new rural area standards (Tam Thanh and Tam Ngoc); 2 communes meeting the advanced new rural area standards (Tam Phu and Tam Thang); 19/24 villages meeting the model new rural area standards.
