In recent times, the model of "Lighting up the border patrol road" has spread strongly from Chi Lang Border Post to the Border Post: Chi Ma, Bac Xa, Po Ma, Na Hinh, Huu Nghi... Thereby, more than 1,500 lamp posts have been installed on 80 km of the provincial border patrol road, contributing to building a peaceful border area, maintaining peace , friendship, cooperation and development.
When the light shines on the patrol
Lang Son has a national border of more than 231 km adjacent to China. The province's border area has 21 border communes and towns - where more than 16,000 households live. To effectively manage and firmly protect national sovereignty and border security, up to now, the State has invested in and concreted more than 120 km of patrol roads in the province, with a 5.5 m wide roadbed and a 3.5 m wide concrete road surface, passing through 3 districts: Loc Binh, Dinh Lap and Trang Dinh. Currently, the patrol route from Trang Dinh district to Van Lang district is continuing to be invested in and built by the State.
Although over 120 km of the border patrol route has been concreted, with winding, steep roads, at night all border patrol and control activities, ensuring security and order in the area before 2023 will face difficulties due to lack of light.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Duc Thang, Party Secretary and Political Commissar of Chi Lang Border Guard Station, said: We organize regular closed border patrols once a week. Sometimes, when there is an emergency, we have to move quickly at night. When there is no solar energy to light up the night, officers and soldiers only use flashlights, especially on rainy or foggy days, the patrol route seems to disappear, visibility and direction are limited, and the risk of slipping and falling is always lurking.
Based on that reality, in early 2023, Chi Lang Border Guard Station boldly proposed and implemented the model of "Lighting up the border patrol road". With the motto "The State and the people work together", the station mobilized the people, encouraged businesses, philanthropists and all officers and soldiers to contribute their efforts and resources to turn the idea into reality.
The terrain survey was conducted carefully, key locations, curves, and border areas were given priority for installing lights first. Each pole uses solar energy lights, suitable for mountainous terrain conditions, where it is impossible to pull the power grid. Up to now, the patrol route in the area under the responsibility of Chi Lang Border Guard Station has had 591 light poles installed along nearly 31 km of patrol route, passing through Binh Xa commune, Dinh Lap district and Tam Gia commune, Loc Binh district with a total value of more than 1.2 billion VND.
“Now that there are lights, we can not only see the road clearly but also react faster when something happens. Organizing surprise patrols at night is much easier. Each lamppost not only clearly lights the patrol route, but also lights up a strong belief in the fence. For soldiers, that is peace of mind in every step of guarding the sovereignty and security of the border,” shared Captain Nguyen Van Thuong, Head of the Administrative Control Team, Chi Lang Border Guard Station.
Spread the model
Following the success of Chi Lang Border Guard Station, many other units have proactively learned and implemented the model of "Lighting up the border patrol route". Typically, Chi Ma Border Guard Station in 2023 installed 278 solar-powered lamp posts on main roads along the border, with a total cost of nearly 600 million VND, all from socialized sources.
Lieutenant Colonel Hoang Trung Hieu, Political Commissar of Chi Ma Border Guard Station, said: Chi Ma Border Guard Station is responsible for managing and protecting more than 16 km of national border and is responsible for the area of 3 communes: Yen Khoai, Tu Mich and Mau Son (Loc Binh district). Realizing the benefits of the "Lighting up the border patrol road" model of Chi Lang Border Guard Station, in 2023, the station immediately started to deploy and build the model. We determined that this is not only a technical solution, but also a way to demonstrate a sense of responsibility in the work of maintaining sovereignty. When there is light, officers and soldiers feel more secure in performing their duties, and people in the border area also feel safe.
Over time, this model continued to spread, thereby achieving positive results. As of April 2025, more than 1,500 lamp posts had been installed along the entire border line of Lang Son province, with a total length of over 80 km at the border lines managed by the border posts: Chi Lang, Chi Ma Border Gate, Po Ma, Na Hinh, Bac Xa, Binh Nghi and Huu Nghi International Border Gate. The total cost of the entire line reached over 3 billion VND. This amount of funding was mobilized from businesses, philanthropists, and the contributions of officers, soldiers and people.
Most recently, the Fatherland Front Committee of Van Lang district mobilized cadres, party members, people, and philanthropists inside and outside the district to support more than 130 million VND to install 80 solar-powered lamp posts, on a length of about 3.3 km from landmark 1046 to landmark 1048 in Trung Khanh commune managed by Na Hinh Border Guard Station. This practical project became even more meaningful when it was inaugurated and handed over on the occasion of the 135th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's birthday (May 19, 1890 - May 19, 2025).
Light up frontier
Now, on the border from Bac Xa, Dinh Lap district to Quoc Khanh commune, Trang Dinh district, there are over 80 km of patrol roads lit up every night. Under the light of the patrol roads, people in remote villages at the headland of the Fatherland are clearly feeling the changes every day.
Born and raised in Ban Thin village, Tu Mich commune, Loc Binh district, Ms. Hoang Thi Dung, currently a teacher at Thuy Nga Kindergarten (Lang Son city) recounted: My house is right next to the patrol road. When I was studying at Loc Binh High School, because the road was dark and dangerous, I did not dare to go home at night, so I had to rent a room near the school. Every time my mother went to a village meeting, she had to invite a few people to go with her, no one dared to go alone at night. Now, when the patrol road is equipped with solar lights, the road is lit up at night, bringing a feeling of safety and peace.
Sharing the same feeling with Ms. Dung, Ms. Hoang Thi Than, Na Vang village, Binh Xa commune, Dinh Lap district shared: My family lives right on the border patrol road, when the Border Guard officers and soldiers constructed the project "Lighting up the border patrol road", we, the people, contributed our efforts and joined hands to build. Since the electric lights have been installed along the road, traveling at night has become much easier; we, the people, feel more confident and secure when we have to go out at night.
For the people, the illuminated patrol road has helped life in the border villages to be revived. Mr. Nguyen Trung Thanh, Secretary of the Party Committee of Binh Xa Commune, Dinh Lap District, said: In the commune, there are about 100 households in Ban Chat and Na Vang villages living near the patrol road. Since the lighting system was installed, people's daily life has become much more convenient, from developing the hill and forest economy to participating in community cultural activities.
The light on the patrol route is not only the foundation for building a solid people's border defense posture, but also a lesson in promoting endogenous strength, connecting the community, and multiplying the spirit of self-management and self-defense, which is becoming the foundation for building a peaceful border. Thus, the solar energy lamp model not only helps border guards and soldiers more easily patrol and control the border, but also contributes to changing the lives of people in the border areas, helping people increase their trust in the armed forces.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Xuan Thanh, Political Commissar of the Provincial Border Guard, said: The model of "Lighting up the border patrol route" has been bringing practical results in the management and protection of national sovereignty and border security. Thanks to the solar lighting system, night patrols have become safer and more convenient, while contributing to improving the effectiveness of preventing and combating illegal entry and exit, smuggling across the border, and ensuring security and order. The light from the lighting system also contributes to improving material and spiritual life, helping people travel more conveniently and easily; people feel secure in living, closely attached to the border, actively developing the economy and society, participating and coordinating with the Border Guard in managing and protecting the national border.
In the coming time, Lang Son Provincial Border Guard will continue to promote propaganda and mobilize socialization to expand the model, increase lighting density in key areas, difficult to travel, especially unlit border roads. At the same time, research and advise on installing additional surveillance camera systems at some strategic locations along the patrol route to combine lighting and security monitoring, enhancing the effectiveness of management and protection of the national border in the new situation.
