On December 19, Hue Central Hospital announced that its medical team had successfully treated the third and fourth children with thalassemia using allogeneic stem cell transplantation and the 40th neuroblastoma transplant.

Following the success of the first two allogeneic bone marrow transplants on patients with congenital hemolytic disease, beta-thalassemia, Hue Central Hospital continues to deploy allogeneic stem cell transplant techniques for children with congenital hemolytic disease, alpha-thalassemia.

Accordingly, the third transplant was for baby HAD (38 months old, from Quang Tri ). Baby D. was diagnosed with alpha-thalassemia a year ago and had to be hospitalized for monthly blood transfusions.

After HLA testing, the child was confirmed to be a perfect match with his 8-year-old brother, so he received a bone marrow transplant on November 12. After the transplant, platelets recovered on the 10th day and granulocytes recovered on the 19th day.

The fourth transplant was for baby Đ.MAT (10 years old, from Da Nang City). The baby was diagnosed with Alpha-Thalassemia at 20 days old and had to be hospitalized for monthly blood transfusions.

After HLA testing, the child was also a perfect match with his 15-year-old brother and underwent an allogeneic bone marrow transplant on November 27. The transplant was successful, although the child experienced mild neutropenia but recovered quickly. Platelets recovered on day 21 and granulocytes recovered on day 19.

The leaders of Hue Central Hospital said that the successful treatment of the third and fourth allogeneic bone marrow transplants on patients with congenital hemolytic anemia and alpha-thalassemia is a major step forward in the application of allogeneic stem cell transplantation techniques.

Marking an important success in the treatment of this disease, opening up many new opportunities for children with congenital hemolytic disease. Children no longer have to depend on regular blood transfusions or daily iron excretion, and develop normally like other healthy children.

Leaders of Hue Central Hospital and Thua Thien Hue Department of Health congratulated the patient on his discharge.

According to doctors at Hue Central Hospital, thalassemia is a genetic disease that causes microcytic anemia, seriously affecting the physical and mental development of children. In severe cases, children must rely on regular blood transfusions, causing iron overload in the body, causing iron accumulation in the body's organs, leading to many difficulties in life.

Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation is considered the optimal treatment method, providing the opportunity for complete recovery for children, helping them to live healthy lives without blood transfusions. Success in allogeneic bone marrow transplantation at the hospital not only brings hope to children with thalassemia, but also opens up treatment prospects for other diseases that require allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, such as bone marrow failure, congenital immunodeficiency and relapsed cancer.

“For allogeneic stem cell transplantation, finding a suitable HLA is a difficult problem. Therefore, in order for the bone marrow transplant process to continue and help more patients with thalassemia, the hospital conducts free HLA testing for patients and their families to find a suitable bone marrow donor,” said the leader of Hue Central Hospital.

In parallel with the implementation of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, Hue Central Hospital has successfully performed the 40th autologous bone marrow transplantation for a patient with high-risk neuroblastoma. That child is Nguyen Phuoc Quynh M. (4.5 years old, from Tien Giang).

With autologous stem cell transplantation technique to help prolong the life of children with high-risk neuroblastoma, Hue Central Hospital is the only hospital in the country with full multimodality in treating neuroblastoma, including: chemotherapy, surgery, bone marrow transplantation and radiotherapy.
