Dr. Bach Thi Chinh, Medical Director of the VNVC Vaccination System, said that this is one of the few vaccines that can prevent 4 diseases at the same time and can be given to adults. The vaccine is produced by MSD Pharmaceutical Group (USA), adding excipients and buffers to stabilize the antigens in the vaccine. Thanks to that, the vaccine ensures safety and the ability to produce immunity.
The vaccine is indicated for people from 12 months of age, and can be given as early as 9 months in case of an epidemic. The vaccine is not given to pregnant women, but should be given at least one month before pregnancy.
"Combination vaccines that prevent many diseases in one injection reflect the development trend of modern medicine, aiming to optimize vaccination schedules, reduce the number of injections, and comprehensively protect children and adults," said Dr. Chinh.
The MMRV vaccine has been administered in nearly 60 countries with more than 66 million doses. Clinical trials have shown that the vaccine is 99% effective in preventing disease after two doses, equivalent to the separate vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox.
Currently, the vaccine costs more than 2.4 million VND per dose. Children 12 months and older and adults receive two doses three months apart, at least one month apart. Women need to complete the vaccination schedule at least one month before becoming pregnant. The vaccine can be used to complete the course of treatment if the measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox vaccines have been previously administered.
Chickenpox, measles, mumps, and rubella are infectious diseases that can spread rapidly, potentially causing epidemics and serious complications in children, adults, and pregnant women.
Chickenpox is characterized by blisters on the skin, often breaking out strongly in February-June every year. Measles usually appears in winter-spring, with a large outbreak cycle every 4-5 years, characterized by red rashes on the skin. Mumps is scattered throughout the year, causing painful swelling of the salivary glands in the cheeks, neck or jaw, and adults with the disease are often more severe than children. Rubella has a rash that spreads from the head to the face and the whole body, causing serious complications in the fetus such as birth defects, stillbirth or miscarriage.
Vietnam is currently circulating vaccines to prevent measles or chickenpox and vaccines that combine measles, mumps and rubella. This is the first vaccine that also prevents chickenpox. VNVC representatives hope that the new vaccine will provide an additional prevention option, providing broader protection for children and adults against the four diseases.
