According to doctors, the school year after summer vacation coincides with the transitional season, with humid weather, changing temperatures and crowded, closed school environments, creating favorable conditions for many infectious diseases to spread and possibly become epidemics.
BSCKII. Nguyen Vu Quynh Hoa - Head of Pediatrics Department, Thu Duc General Hospital ( Ho Chi Minh City) said: "Some infectious diseases can be prevented by vaccines such as measles, mumps, chickenpox, meningitis... but the vaccination rate is still lower than the target of 95%, making the risk of outbreaks in schools still present."
At Thu Duc General Hospital, the number of children coming for examination is increasing, of which respiratory diseases account for 50% of the admissions, an average of 350 cases per week, 10% of which require inpatient treatment. Common diseases are viral rhinopharyngitis, streptococcal pharyngitis, and pneumonia. In addition, dengue fever and hand, foot and mouth disease are also increasing rapidly during the rainy season, especially from September to November.
Digestive and urinary diseases are also common due to poor hygiene habits, drinking little water or sharing personal items. The incidence of Japanese encephalitis, meningococcal disease, chickenpox, mumps, etc. also tends to increase in collective environments.
To prevent disease, parents need to train children to wash their hands regularly, prepare personal items (water bottles, towels, masks, antiseptic solutions), ensure a reasonable diet and sleep. Do not use drugs on your own, especially antibiotics. When children have severe symptoms such as high fever, difficulty breathing, severe abdominal pain, etc., they need to be taken to a medical facility promptly.
