During the changing seasons, the water source of the Vam Co Dong River is easily polluted.

The weekly newsletter "Monitoring and forecasting results of water quality in the irrigation system between the two Vam Co rivers, serving water for agricultural production" (sampling date 11-13.5) of the Southern Institute of Water Resources on May 19 stated that, based on calculation results, the current water quality on May 11-13.5 in most areas across the system has deteriorated compared to the monitoring period on April 27.

The water quality of the Vam Co Dong River shows signs of decline during the changing seasons (Photo taken at the foot of Ben Soi Bridge, Chau Thanh District).

The reason is that at present, it is the transitional season, rainwater dissolves substances from the ground surface and flows into canals, leading to an increasing concentration of accumulated pollutants. In addition, due to the production situation in the system preparing for the Summer-Autumn crop, water quality is affected.

Faced with the decline in water quality, the Southern Institute of Water Resources Research recommends that local authorities in the region be warned about the current state of microbiological pollution due to the very high number of Coliforms in the water. Measures must be taken to treat water when using it for domestic use. Care must be taken when using water for raw vegetables. Wash with salt water, potassium permanganate or disinfectants and wash food before eating. In addition, when using water for aquaculture purposes, measures must be taken to treat the water before supplying it to the pond to limit the source of disease from outside into the pond.

Mr. Nguyen Hoai An (Chau Thanh district) said that his family has lived along the Vam Co Dong River for more than 40 years. However, currently, the water source of the Vam Co Dong River is no longer used for daily activities. The underground water source taken from the river is only used for hygiene, bathing and washing, and for drinking water, his family buys bottled filtered water.

The decline in water quality of the Vam Co Dong River during the transitional season has many objective and subjective reasons, of which the objective reasons have been pointed out by competent authorities as above. In addition, untreated domestic wastewater from residential areas flowing into canals and ditches and then into the Vam Co Dong River is also a cause. Regarding this issue, in recent times, the province has invested in implementing wastewater treatment plants in urban areas to treat domestic wastewater to meet standards. Hopefully, after the projects are completed, the water quality of the Vam Co Dong River will be improved.
