According to the latest assessment of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (Department of Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting), from now until the end of 2025, it is forecasted that about 5 storms and tropical depressions will make landfall; dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, and hail will continue to occur nationwide.

Regarding heat and cold air, the meteorological agency forecasts that heat will last until August in the Northern and Central regions, then decrease; cold air will gradually become stronger from around October 2025.

Beware of storms, lightning and hail

Expert Hoang Phuc Lam - Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said ENSO (a phenomenon that refers to both El Nino and La Nina, related to air pressure fluctuations between the two coasts of the Eastern Pacific Ocean and the Eastern Indian Ocean) is continuing in neutral conditions, with the standard deviation of sea surface temperature in the central equatorial Pacific Ocean at a level equivalent to the average of many years in the first week of June.

It is forecasted that from July to September 2025, ENSO will likely continue to maintain a neutral state with a probability of 70-90%.

With the above meteorological trend, Mr. Lam assessed that in the next 3 months, storms and tropical depressions operating in the East Sea and affecting Vietnam's mainland are likely to be at a level approximately equal to the average of many years. It is forecasted that there will be about 6.4 storms or tropical depressions in the East Sea; of which about 2.9 will make landfall.

Also from July to September, the meteorological agency forecasts that dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong winds will continue to occur nationwide. In particular, there is a high possibility of moderate and heavy rains occurring in the Northern, North Central, Central Highlands and Southern regions.

Regarding the heat, expert Hoang Phuc Lam said the heat concentrated in the Northern and Central regions will last until August.

From September, the heat gradually decreases. The average temperature in the next 3 months nationwide will generally be approximately the same as the average of many years in the same period.

“In the above climate conditions, storms, tropical depressions and the southwest monsoon will cause strong winds and large waves that will affect the activities of ships. Along with that, hot weather, heavy rain, thunderstorms, tornadoes and lightning can negatively affect production activities and public health,” noted expert Hoang Phuc Lam.

Cold air is strong from October

In the next period from October to December 2025, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Hoang Phuc Lam said that ENSO is likely to continue to remain neutral with a probability of 55-65%.

With the above meteorological trend, cold air is forecast to gradually become stronger from around October, then increase in intensity from November 2025.

Also in the last 3 months of the year, there is a possibility of about 4.6 storms and tropical depressions appearing in the East Sea (of which about 1.9 storms will affect the mainland). Storms and tropical depressions are forecasted to cause large waves in the East Sea from 6-8m, and waves 4-6m high in the sea off the Central region.

The hydrometeorological agency also noted that from October to December 2025, due to the influence of the strong Northeast monsoon, waves in the Gulf of Tonkin could reach 2-4m, and waves off the Central coast could reach 4-6m.

In addition to storms and cold air, it is forecasted that dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind will occur nationwide, concentrated in October and November 2025.

“During the forecast period, we need to be on guard against moderate and heavy rains in the Central region,” expert Hoang Phuc Lam emphasized.

Forecasting rainfall trends, Mr. Lam predicted that from October to November 2025, total rainfall in the Central and South Central regions and the Central Highlands will be 10-25% higher than the average of many years, while other places will be approximately the average of many years in the same period.

From December 2025, total rainfall in regions nationwide will be approximately the same as the average of many years.

In the Mekong River basin alone, total rainfall in most river basins in October will generally be 10-20% higher. In the following month, total rainfall in the upstream region will be approximately the long-term average; in the middle and downstream regions, it will be 5-15% higher than the long-term average.

The Hydrometeorological Agency also forecasts that from October to December 2025, there will be 6 high tides in the coastal area of the Southeast. Of which, the high tide from October 7 to 11, the water level in Vung Tau may be at 4.15m; the high tide from November 2 to 10, the water level at Vung Tau station may be above 4.35m.

“Due to the impact of high tides, low-lying areas at coastal river mouths and coastal areas in the coastal provinces of the Southeast region are at risk of flooding. In addition, high tides also cause deep saltwater intrusion into river branches, affecting water resources and agricultural production,” Mr. Lam added.
