Indonesia's capital Jakarta has consistently ranked among the world's 10 most polluted cities since May, according to data from Swiss air quality technology company IQAir.

Jakarta, the capital city of more than 10 million people, records unhealthy levels of air pollution almost every day, according to IQAir.

Jakarta residents have long complained about toxic air from traffic, industrial fumes and coal-fired power plants. Some residents sued the government to take action to control air pollution and won a civil case in 2021. The court at the time ruled that President Joko Widodo must set national air quality standards to protect human health, and that the health minister and the Jakarta governor must come up with strategies to control air pollution.

However, Nathan Roestandy, co-founder of air quality app Nafas Indonesia, said pollution levels continue to worsen. “We take more than 20,000 breaths a day. If we breathe polluted air every day, it can lead to respiratory and lung diseases, even asthma. It can affect children’s cognitive development or even mental health,” he said.

When asked about Jakarta's pollution problem recently, President Widodo said the solution was to move the country's capital from Jakarta to Nusantara. Indonesia plans to make Nusantara its new capital next year, and at least 16,000 civil servants, military and police will move there.
