"Like many young people, I'm easily drawn to movie review channels. I used to watch them a lot, but I gradually realized that it's quite time-consuming," shared the valedictorian of the National Economics University, who achieved a perfect score.
Hoang Mai Huong, born in 2002, is one of the four valedictorians graduating with a perfect 4.0/4.0 GPA from the National Economics University this year. The auditing major says that her secret to consistently maintaining an "all A" GPA at this leading economics university is her efficient time management. According to her, she didn't have a particularly outstanding background; in fact, she felt somewhat insecure because she came from a relatively unknown university in Ha Nam province . "That insecurity made me overlook the university's scholarship policies because I thought I would never be able to get one," Huong recalled. Therefore, in her first semester, despite achieving A grades in all subjects, Huong missed out on a scholarship because she didn't accumulate enough credits. Regretting her decision but also believing that "I can do it too," Huong began researching scholarships and set a goal to achieve them in the remaining semesters.

Huong excels at self-study. In most subjects, she reads the textbook before class. While reading, she asks herself, "Why is this the way it is?" If she can't find the answer in the textbook, she searches the internet for information. If she still can't understand it, she takes notes to ask her teachers the next day. "I always worry that if I haven't prepared for class the next morning, I'll miss something when the teacher teaches. Reading beforehand is like the teacher repeating what I've already learned, so I remember it much better," Huong said. Additionally, in all subjects, Huong chooses to sit in the front row. This helps her concentrate better because sitting close to the lecturer makes it difficult to get distracted. Since the teachers usually lecture very quickly, Huong chooses to take notes on her computer, with each subject having a separate data file saved on Google Drive. When it came time to review, the female student compiled and wrote down all the theory and exercises from Chapter 1 into a new notebook. According to Huong, this was time-consuming but very effective. Maintaining this study method helped Huong achieve scholarships in all remaining semesters.Mai Huong receives a certificate of commendation from the school. (Photo: Provided by the interviewee)
Besides studying, Huong has been involved in scientific research since her third year, while also tutoring and running an online business on several e-commerce platforms. She co-authored a paper published in an international conference. To effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously, Mai Huong says she is always strict with herself. There's virtually no downtime between her work. She also has little time for leisure, such as sitting around browsing TikTok or using social media. “Like many young people, I'm easily drawn to movie review channels. Before, I used to watch them while eating, but I gradually realized this was quite time-consuming. To avoid those temptations, I think I need determination and to always keep myself busy. The more tasks I have, the stricter I need to be. Also, every night before bed, I mentally plan out what tasks I need to do the next day, prioritizing what's more important,” Huong said. Huong's only form of entertainment right now is... listening to music while studying. She's maintained this study method since high school. "Before, my parents used to wonder how I could concentrate on studying while listening to music. But when I listen to music, everything flows more smoothly and I feel less bored."Mai Huong and her father at her graduation ceremony. (Photo: Provided by the interviewee)
Receiving the title of valedictorian of the National Economics University, Mai Huong felt surprised but also happy because her efforts and hard work had paid off. “For me, it’s a spectacular change. This result partly comes from my constant self-discipline and perseverance,” Huong said. Accompanying Mai Huong in both her studies and research, Associate Professor Dr. Doan Thanh Nga was impressed by her student’s diligence, discipline, ambition, proactive approach to seeking new knowledge, and willingness to ask questions to clarify issues. “Huong is very intelligent in applying theory to practice. This result comes from Huong’s perseverance, effort, and passion for learning. She always sets high goals for herself and constantly finds ways to overcome challenges to achieve them. These are valuable qualities that not every student possesses,” Associate Professor Dr. Doan Thanh Nga said. Currently, Mai Huong is working at a top-tier independent auditing firm. The female student is also preparing to take an auditing certification exam to support her work and plans to continue her studies at the master's level in Vietnam.Vietnamnet.vn
