Anadolu news agency quoted a statement from Hamas accusing Israel of carrying out the attack, stating: "Leader Ismail Haniyeh, head of the movement, died in an attack... on his residence in Tehran after he attended the inauguration of the new Iranian president."

According to Reuters, on the same day, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also confirmed that leader Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed.

The IRGC said the attack took place in the early morning of July 31 and the force is investigating the cause.

Earlier on July 30, Mr. Haniyeh attended the inauguration ceremony of the new president of Iran and met with the country's Supreme Leader.

AFP quoted Hamas Islamist movement official Sami Abu Zuhri as saying that the attack was a serious escalation and the opponent would not achieve its goal.

Meanwhile, according to the Hamas-run Al-Aqsa TV channel, Hamas official Moussa Abu Marzouk said that the perpetrator of the attack "will not escape punishment".

Currently, no organization or individual has claimed responsibility for the above incident.
