Prime Minister meets WTO Director General, expresses concerns about protectionism

At the meeting with WTO Director General Okonjo-Iweala, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that in the process of international integration in general and international economic integration in particular, Vietnam always highly appreciates the cooperation and support of the WTO.

The Prime Minister expressed concerns about protectionism and new standards related to climate change, citing the difficulties developing economies face due to these barriers.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh proposed that the WTO discuss with developed countries to provide technical assistance to developing countries, emphasizing the need for a suitable roadmap for implementation.

WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala assessed Vietnam as a success story in socio-economic development and highly appreciated the WTO's cooperation with Vietnam.

Regarding the Prime Minister's concern, the WTO Director General announced that recently a delegation of experts from the European Commission worked with the WTO, listening to the opinions of developing countries and the WTO called for necessary technical assistance.

The Director General announced that at the end of February 2024, there will be a WTO Ministerial Conference on the Agreement on Food Safety and Sanitation - SPS and hopes that Vietnam will actively participate.
