Ukrinform said that in the congratulatory video, President Zelensky admitted that no one would "give" peace to the country, but believed that the US would accompany Ukraine in Russia's 34-month-long special military campaign.
Recalling his conversations with incumbent US President Joe Biden, President-elect Donald Trump and Kiev supporters in Washington, the leader also expressed his belief that Mr. Trump wants and is capable of bringing peace and ending the conflict in the Eastern European country.
Ukraine has had a difficult year as Russian forces have steadily seized more territory and advanced more rapidly on the eastern front than they did at the start of their military campaign in February 2022.
In recent months, Mr. Zelensky has argued that any agreement to resolve the conflict must be based on receiving security guarantees from Western countries, as well as Ukraine being invited to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an idea that Russia has completely rejected.
In a development on the front lines, on the last day of 2024, the Ukrainian military said it had attacked a Russian oil depot in the western Smolensk region, setting oil tanks ablaze.
The Ukrainian General Staff announced on the Telegram app that the oil depot was used for military purposes, but did not specify the type of weapon used in the attack.
The attack caused a fuel leak and a fire, Smolensk region governor Vasily Anokhin said. Russian air defenses shot down 10 Ukrainian drones in the incident, but debris from one of them hit the oil facility.
