The fact that Vietnamese people consume a lot of BBQ (grilled foods), soft drinks, fast food ... was just mentioned by Mr. Luong Ngoc Khue - Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management ( Ministry of Health ) - at the workshop on solutions towards the goal of becoming a regional health care center in ASEAN, organized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with Tien Phong newspaper on October 19.

Mr. Khue said that after the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for medical examination and treatment of people around the world has increased very high. Countries are facing a dual disease model, in addition to very old diseases such as hand, foot and mouth disease, dengue fever , recently emerging infectious diseases such as COVID-19, monkeypox...
In particular, many people are facing non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. In addition to the problem of malnutrition in remote areas, large cities are facing a situation of overnutrition.
Mr. Khue said: "Foreign nutrition professors who came to Vietnam to meet us at many conferences welcomed the gradual attention, prevention, and eradication of malnutrition. However, they expressed their condolences when Vietnamese people consume a lot of BBQ (grilled foods), soft drinks, and fast food" and as a result, many children are obese.
In addition to the above issues, the Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management said that Vietnam is facing many health care issues, including population aging, mental health, food safety and hygiene, climate change, air pollution, traffic accidents, etc. According to him, these are very challenging issues, especially for a large city like Ho Chi Minh City and is in the process of becoming the health care center of ASEAN.
What needs to be done to become the ASEAN regional health care center? Mr. Khue asked and affirmed that it is not only about heart, liver, kidney, stem cell transplants, but also about doing well the above issues so that foreigners, tourists , investors can come and overseas Vietnamese can return to the country.
And to "retain" patients in the country, according to him, hospitals need to meet the medical examination and treatment needs of people with high incomes, because a person with money cannot just force them to lie on a health insurance hospital bed. Both public and private medical examination and treatment facilities must meet if patients have this need.
Dr. Nguyen Anh Dung - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health - affirmed that the formation of a specialized medical center for health care in the ASEAN region is the core and central goal of Ho Chi Minh City. To achieve this goal, the health sector has proposed many groups of solutions, including developing medical tourism combining modern medicine and the strengths of traditional medicine.
He cited that in the region there are currently some countries that are prominent in medical tourism such as Thailand (3.5 million people), Singapore (1.5 million people), Malaysia (1.3 million people)... and affirmed: "HCMC is also a destination for medical tourism. Traditional medicine is a very attractive specialty for medical tourism, in addition to the specialized techniques of modern medicine. This is what we have been striving for."
