Traders are scrambling to buy, driving pepper prices skyrocket.

Due to supply shortages, traders are competing to buy, causing the upward trend in pepper prices to continue. In the first days of September, the price of pepper in the domestic market reached 153,000 VND/kg, an average increase of about 15,000 VND/kg compared to the beginning of the previous month.

In the Central Highlands and Southeast provinces, pepper prices are trading around 153,000 VND/kg; compared to the beginning of August, the average increase is about 15,000 VND/kg.

According to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , the "fever" in pepper prices is due to the dwindling domestic supply as the 2025 pepper harvest concluded in early summer. Many farmers have sold all their produce, while inventories at dealers and businesses are low. Meanwhile, export demand is showing strong signs of recovery, also driving up pepper prices. This has led to intense competition among businesses and traders to procure raw materials, causing prices to continuously increase in recent days.

In August, Vietnam exported 21,000 tons of pepper worth $127 million, bringing the total volume and value of pepper exports for the first eight months of 2025 to 166,000 tons and $1.1 billion, a decrease of 9.8% in volume but an increase of 27% in value compared to the same period in 2024.

The average export price of pepper over the past eight months reached US$6,740 per ton, an increase of nearly 41% compared to the same period in 2024. In 2024, for the first time in many years, pepper exports will return to the "billion-dollar club". With the current growth rate, it is highly likely that pepper exports this year will exceed the total export value for 2024, which is US$1.3 billion.

Vietnam's three largest pepper export markets are the US, accounting for 25% of the market share; Germany, 8.3%; and India, 6.6%. Compared to the same period last year, the value of pepper exports to the US increased by 20.5%, to Germany by 43%, and to India by 68.5%.

Among the top 15 export markets, the UK saw the strongest increase in pepper export value, rising 2.2 times.
