Traders compete to buy, pushing pepper prices up

Due to the shortage of supply, traders are competing to buy, causing the increase in pepper prices to continue. In the first days of September, pepper prices in the domestic market reached 153,000 VND/kg, an average increase of about 15,000 VND/kg compared to the beginning of last month.

According to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , the "fever" in pepper prices is due to the fact that domestic supply is gradually depleting as the 2025 pepper harvest has ended since early summer. Many farmers have sold out their products, while inventories in agents and businesses are not high. Meanwhile, export demand is showing signs of strong recovery, also pushing up pepper prices. This has forced businesses and traders to compete to collect raw materials, pushing prices up continuously in recent days.

In August, Vietnam exported 21,000 tons of pepper worth 127 million USD, bringing the total volume and value of pepper exports in the first 8 months of 2025 to 166,000 tons and turnover of 1.1 billion USD, down 9.8% in volume but up 27% in value compared to the same period in 2024.

The average export price of pepper in the past 8 months reached 6,740 USD/ton, an increase of nearly 41% compared to the same period in 2024. In 2024, for the first time in many years, pepper exports returned to the "billion-dollar club". With the current growth momentum, it is likely that this year pepper exports will exceed the total turnover of 2024 at 1.3 billion USD.

Vietnam's three largest pepper consuming markets are the US, accounting for 25% of the market share; Germany 8.3% and India 6.6%. Compared to the same period last year, pepper export value to the US market increased by 20.5%, Germany increased by 43%, and India increased by 68.5%.

Among the 15 largest export markets, pepper export value increased the most in the UK with a 2.2-fold increase./.
