Thac Mo Hydropower Plant: Proactively regulating reservoirs, coordinating with inter-reservoirs to ensure downstream safety

(DN) - In the context of complicated weather developments and heavy rains appearing locally in the Be River basin, Thac Mo Hydropower Joint Stock Company (TMP) has proactively implemented measures to regulate the reservoir in accordance with the procedures approved by competent authorities, and at the same time closely coordinated with inter-reservoir operating units in the area to cut and reduce floods downstream, ensuring absolute safety for the project and people in the downstream area.

In recent years, regarding reservoir operations, TMP has always strictly implemented the Thac Mo Hydropower Reservoir Operation Procedure and the Inter-reservoir Operation Procedure in the Dong Nai River Basin. All regulatory decisions are based on hydrometeorological forecasts, reservoir water levels, reservoir inflows, spillway discharge capacity as well as the actual situation downstream.

In October 2025, based on the actual water situation of Thac Mo Hydropower Reservoir in the past time and the mobilization of the operating capacity of the National Electricity System and Market Operation Company Limited (NSMO), TMP issued notices to regulate water through the reservoir spillway. Accordingly, at 4:00 p.m. on October 19, 2025, TMP raised spillway gate No. 2 with an opening of 0.5 m, corresponding to a discharge flow of 44 m3/s, thus the total amount of water discharged downstream was about 290 m3/s.

In parallel with the regulation work, TMP has proactively applied a modern operational monitoring system, allowing continuous monitoring of rainfall and lake water levels in real time. At the same time, TMP also applies science and technology in building software to forecast water flow to Thac Mo Lake, helping to calculate flow models, forecast water surges and support timely and accurate regulation decisions. Thanks to that, the regulation of the spillway of Thac Mo Lake is always carried out under control, ensuring absolute safety for the project, minimizing impacts on downstream areas and maintaining stability for the national power system.

In particular, TMP always focuses on information and community coordination. All regulatory notices are sent simultaneously in writing, via text messages and internal media to local authorities, organizations and people in the downstream area. Warnings are deployed by loudspeakers, sirens, and electronic boards, helping people proactively grasp the situation and take timely preventive measures.

Thanks to proper operation and effective coordination, Thac Mo reservoir has played a good role in cutting and reducing flood peaks for the downstream area of Be River, while ensuring the reservoir's water level reaches normal levels for the dry season of 2026, contributing to maintaining stable electricity output and providing water for daily life, agriculture and industry in the region.

With a high sense of responsibility, Thac Mo Hydropower Joint Stock Company affirms to continue maintaining the operating principles of "Correct procedures - Safety - Transparency - Responsibility to the community", thereby contributing with Power Generation Corporation 2 and Vietnam Electricity Group to effectively implement the goal of regulating water resources, ensuring downstream safety and sustainable development.
