Since mid-December, every day Ms. Nhi (owner of a nail salon in District 4, Ho Chi Minh City) has been sweating profusely, taking care of over 20 customers who come to get their beauty treatments done each day.
In addition to simple nail cutting and painting services, Nhi will also accept requests for high-end nail services such as powder coating, stone attachment, and photo stickers... Each customer will pay from 220,000 VND to 350,000 VND to have a satisfactory set of nails.
"After deducting all costs such as premises, electricity, water, materials, etc., each worker will earn 2 million VND/day, the whole shop earns more than 6 million VND. This is the time when we earn the most in the year. Especially, near Tet, employees working with the shop will have their wages doubled, and receive a "hot" bonus if they work late at night," said Ms. Nhi.

Learning from previous years when customers had to wait 2 hours to be served, this year Nhi began taking reservations by phone and social media last month. By mid-December, all of the shop's staff had been working continuously from 7am until past midnight.
"Many times we don't have time to eat or sleep, we can only drink milk and then go back to work because we can't let customers wait in line," Nhi shared.
Accordingly, Lunar New Year is always considered the "money-making" season for beauty services. Normally, Ms. Nhi only welcomes 5-6 customers/day, but during the Lunar New Year month, this number increases 4 times, bringing in tens of thousands of dong in revenue for the shop.
Similarly, since the end of January 2024, Ms. Le Vy's nail salon (34 years old, living in Go Vap district, Ho Chi Minh City) has been bustling with customers. All customers currently accepted are regulars who have made appointments in advance. Ms. Vy has to refuse walk-in customers who cannot arrange their time.
With a continuous large number of customers for 15 days before Tet, nail salons bring in an income of 2 to 3 million VND/day for each nail technician.

Besides nail services, hair salons are also busier than ever during Tet. Ms. Dong (30 years old, hair salon owner in Hoc Mon district, Ho Chi Minh City) shared that everyone wants to beautify themselves and have a beautiful new look for Tet, so the number of customers at the end of the year and before Tet is always the busiest. Hair salons' income comes from curling, straightening, and dyeing services with prices in the area ranging from 500 thousand to 1.3 million VND/time.
"Every day I have to divide the staff into 3 shifts, each shift has 5 customers. On weekends, the shop is always overloaded so we cannot accept additional customers, we can only reschedule to another, later date. During this time, in addition to overtime pay, the shop's staff also enjoy special benefits, those who work hard will have a prosperous Tet holiday," Ms. Dong added.

Although the number of customers at the end of the year is always high, many beauty salons share that with the difficult economic situation like 2023, the number of customers is no longer the same as before. At the same time, the development of beauty services thanks to technology and price competition also makes many nail salons have to find ways to retain customers during this time.
"It's already mid-December, but the number of customers is only half of last year's. In addition to on-site services, my salon also makes "nail boxes" so customers can do their own beauty treatments at home. This adaptation helps us still have a good income, avoiding the congestion of customers near Tet," Nhi added.
