The Green Voices debate contest season 2 ended with a positive impression after the breakthrough performance of thousands of students. Among them, many initiatives were highly appreciated by the Professional Council for their practicality and wide applicability.

After more than 5 months of exciting competition, the Green Voice debate contest season 2 has introduced to the public hundreds of new and highly practical ideas, thereby affirming the image of a young generation of Vietnam that is creative and responsible for environmental issues and sustainable development.

Growing up through each round

For many parents, Green Voice is not only a playground for knowledge but also a journey to witness the growth of their children. Ms. Dinh Thuy Nga - mother of a contestant from the Greenie Goofballs team - burst into tears when her daughter was named First Prize in the English category.

"In each round, I am nervous but also happy to see my children grow up day by day," Ms. Nga shared. "This is not only a contest about speaking skills, but also an opportunity for children to develop their thinking, expand their knowledge about the environment and learn how to spread positive values."

She humorously compared Green Voice to a "beauty pageant" because in addition to competing, contestants also learn from prestigious advisors to develop their skills comprehensively.

According to her, the joy of meeting and learning from leading experts has motivated the contestants to stay full of energy despite their busy schedules.

Meanwhile, Ms. Phan Thi Thanh Huyen – parent of the Green Ambassador contestant who won first prize in the Vietnamese category – traveled hundreds of kilometers from Nghe An to Hanoi to accompany her child during the 2-day Finals. For her, each step in the competition is a mark, affirming the responsibility and role of the young generation in protecting the environment.

"At this age, young people's awareness of their responsibility to the environment, even through small actions, creates great value. Green Voice is an opportunity for them to assert their voice," she said.

Not only parents, teachers also feel pride and happiness when witnessing the growth of students through each round of competition.

Mr. Huynh Tan Chau - Principal of Luong Van Chanh High School for the Gifted, Phu Yen Province - could not hide his pride when mentioning the encouraging achievements of his students. The students who participated in season 1 passed on their experiences to the students participating in season 2, contributing to the success with two second prizes and one consolation prize.

"The fact that you guys made it to the finals and performed so well is a great success. You not only demonstrated your intelligence and bravery, but also strongly inspired a sense of responsibility towards the community and the environment," said Mr. Chau.

Project replication potential

Green Voice season 2 leaves its mark with groundbreaking ideas, unique presentations and inspiring learning spirit.

After two seasons of accompanying the contest, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Cuc from the Faculty of Chemistry and Environment, Thuy Loi University expressed her impression with the way the contestants not only listened but also observed and felt the environmental issues around them.

"You pay attention to the problems in your locality, from there propose solutions close to the reality of daily life," Professor Cuc expressed.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Kithmina Hewage - senior development policy advisor at the Asian Center for Philanthropy and Society (CAPS, Hong Kong, China) - highly appreciated the teams' focus on solving problems arising from daily life, such as food waste or flooding in Hanoi.

"This is a familiar problem to the students. What is impressive is that the solution is not only creative but also ambitious," he emphasized.

Green Voice witnessed many elaborately invested projects, typically the smart trash bin system integrated with AI, the blockchain-based Eco-Token model to encourage green tourism , the idea of creating sustainable building materials from soil, straw and sand, or creating artificial canals to filter rainwater, reduce flooding and pollution.

Ms. Wen-Yu Weng - Energy and Utilities Consultant at PA Consulting (UK) - praised the contestants' determination. "Not only stopping at ideas, students also thought about creating prototypes, thoroughly researching and learning about sustainability in many fields," she commented.

Agreeing, Mr. Kithmina Hewage added that the contestants should not only focus on the problem and solution, but also consider the challenges and impacts of the proposed solution.

“This shows incredible effort and a willingness to go beyond the curriculum to seek further knowledge,” he shared.

According to Hyewon Rho, CEO of Debate For All and head coach of the Vietnamese team for the World High School Debate Championships, some of the solutions can even be applied in other Southeast Asian countries because climate issues always require international cooperation. Many of the solutions can be scaled up, just by adjusting them to suit the local context. Most of them are suitable for urbanization in Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia or Malaysia.

Not only scoring points with their green projects, the contestants also won over the international judges with their engaging presentation styles. Ms. Hyewon Rho expressed her impression of the contestants' use of cheerful presentation styles, interesting slogans and coordinated movements to lighten the competition atmosphere.

"The speech structure was tight and the teams' logic was very good. Funny team names and creative leading helped make the presentation more lively," she added.

Paving the way for the Green generation

Commenting on Green Voice season 2, Mr. Nguyen Nhat Hung - co-founder and CEO of SocioLogic - expressed surprise that overcoming all geographical limits, the contest received strong attention from all over the country.

"Normally, in debate competitions, the presence of contestants from Hanoi is often overwhelming. But at Green Voice, we saw the participation of contestants from Nghe An, Tra Vinh and many other regions," he said.

According to him, this makes the competition truly a national playground, "reaching students from all over the country". In particular, many teams this year also impressed by using sign language to convey messages with the hope that through the competition, the message will be spread to more groups of people.

Meanwhile, Professor Cuc highly appreciates the way today's young generation approaches environmental issues from a multidimensional perspective. "They not only focus on technical solutions but also consider policy aspects in the same context to solve the problem. I think this is a very positive change," she shared.

Not only is it a launching pad for breakthrough ideas, the Green Voices competition also impacts parents, teachers and the wider community. Mr. Kithmina Hewage hopes that this will be a platform to contribute to promoting awareness of sustainable solutions.

"The large participation of parents and teachers today shows that green ideas are gradually spreading from the school level to the community in the city and surrounding areas," he emphasized.
