According to the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, Institute of Earth Sciences (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.6 occurred in Mang But commune, Quang Ngai province on the afternoon of September 11; the natural disaster risk level is 0.

This was the third earthquake in the area on September 11th.

Specifically, the earthquake, with a magnitude of 3.6, occurred at 2:48:31 PM ( Hanoi time) on September 11th, at coordinates 14.883 degrees North latitude and 108.274 degrees East longitude, with a focal depth of approximately 8.1 km. The natural disaster risk level is 0.

Earlier this morning, two consecutive earthquakes, one of which measured 4.5 magnitude and was classified as a level 1 natural disaster risk, occurred in this area.

According to Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Earth Sciences), earthquakes can be classified into two types: those of natural origin and those caused by human activities.

Natural earthquakes are formed by the accumulation of energy generated by tectonic faults or in areas with volcanic eruptions. Meanwhile, induced earthquakes are caused by human activities such as the construction of reservoirs, hydroelectric dams, mining, nuclear explosions, etc.

The three earthquakes in Mang But this time were induced earthquakes. From 2021 to the present, hundreds of earthquakes have been recorded in Quang Ngai (the area of the former Kon Tum province, concentrated in the former Kon Plong district), including earthquakes that caused widespread tremors.

The largest earthquake was the one on the afternoon of July 28, 2024, with a magnitude of 5.0.

Prior to that, on August 23, 2022, there was a 4.7 magnitude earthquake.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh predicted that earthquakes in the former Kon Tum area will continue in the near future, but are unlikely to exceed 5.5 magnitude. However, more detailed studies are still needed to assess seismic activity in this region.
