Tonali is in trouble again for his involvement in a betting organization. |
According to Italian media, the investigation related to Tonali this time does not stop at betting, but also "debt collection" as well as supporting the operation of the player's betting line.
Il Messaggero newspaper revealed that Tonali was accused by Milan authorities of acting as an intermediary in an illegal betting network.
According to the investigation documents, Tonali and many players such as Nicolo Fagioli, Weston McKennie, Nicolo Zaniolo and even Angel Di Maria are suspected of using banned betting platforms to place many bets, including poker and sports other than football.
In particular, Tonali and Fagioli are said to have introduced the platform, instructed on how to open accounts and receive cash to deposit on behalf of others. Both played the role of collecting money in the system, responsible for receiving money from players and transferring it to the betting organization.
According to the content of the asset seizure order of up to 1.5 million euros from the Milan prosecutor, the pair of players not only played the role of intermediaries in the network, but also received commissions or had debts written off as a form of payment.

A series of legal actions were launched. Five non-players were placed under house arrest on suspicion of organising betting and money laundering, while police also seized €1.5m from a Milan jewellery store – believed to be the “headquarters” of the ring.
The investigation was sparked by an analysis of Tonali and Fagioli's electronic devices, which revealed 12 other players, including many stars who have played or are playing in Serie A. Tonali himself admitted to betting more than 100,000 euros, including on matches involving Newcastle between September and October 2023.
In October 2023, Tonali was banned for 10 months by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for illegal betting. In May, he was banned for a further two months by the FA's Independent Commission for betting violations. Tonali will not return to action until October 2024.
Despite his legal troubles, Tonali has made his mark on the pitch, scoring four goals and providing two assists in 37 appearances this season. He was part of Newcastle's 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, helping the club win their first domestic title in nearly 70 years.
