Earlier in May, the US State Department asked all consular offices abroad to step up screening of visa applications from people intending to come to Harvard for any purpose - from study, research to academic exchange.
On May 22, Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) Kristi Noem also ordered a halt to Harvard University's Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), which is the legal basis for the school to recruit foreign students.
This decision affects the future of thousands of students as well as directly hits Harvard University's revenue from these student groups.
DHS says Harvard University "incites violence and anti-Semitism."
The prestigious school has denied all allegations and pledged to support international students.
The school also filed a lawsuit against the federal government over its decision to revoke its right to enroll international students and won a temporary restraining order from federal Judge Allison Burroughs to block the DHS decision.
Losing international students, who make up more than 25 percent of the school's student body, would be devastating for Harvard, costing it tens of thousands of dollars in tuition per international student per academic year.
Harvard is known as the richest university in the United States, with an endowment fund of up to 53.2 billion USD in 2024./.
