Ho Chi Minh City starts two packages worth over VND2,370 billion to renovate Xuyen Tam canal

On November 18, the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board held a groundbreaking ceremony for two packages XL-01 and XL-02 under the project of dredging, improving the environment and building infrastructure of Xuyen Tam canal (section from Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal to Vam Thuat river). This is an important step in the development of a traffic axis and landscape connecting the areas of An Nhon - Binh Loi Trung - Binh Thanh - Gia Dinh.

Xuyen Tam Canal is one of the most polluted canals in Ho Chi Minh City.

Mr. Dau An Phuc, Director of the Project Management Board, said that the Xuyen Tam canal project was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council in 2022 with a total investment of more than 17,000 billion VND. The canal has a length of 8.865 km, with investment in dredging, construction of prestressed concrete embankments, completion of wastewater collection system, traffic roads on both banks, parks - green areas, lighting and technical infrastructure.

The project consists of three construction packages. Package XL-01 is approximately 2.94 km long from Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal to Bui Dinh Tuy bridge.

Package XL-02 is about 4.51 km long from Bui Dinh Tuy Bridge to Luong Ngoc Quyen Street. Package XL-03 is 1.3 km long to Vam Thuat River and started construction in May 2025, currently in the mass construction phase, striving to complete in November 2026.

Mr. Phuc said that the two XL-01 and XL-02 packages that started construction this time have fully prepared human resources, materials and construction requirements to ensure quality, urban aesthetics, safety and environmental sanitation.

The entire project is expected to be completed in 2028. When put into operation, the canal will improve the environment, beautify the urban area and create a new traffic connection axis to promote socio -economic development.

Ho Chi Minh City started construction on two packages XL01 and XL02 of the Xuyen Tam canal renovation project, forming a new traffic axis and landscape and speeding up the completion of the entire route.

Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Bui Xuan Cuong said that Xuyen Tam canal is a large-scale infrastructure project, involving more than 2,000 households, so compensation and resettlement work must be prioritized.

He asked units to increase equipment and human resources to speed up progress. Package XL-03 needs to be completed by September 2026; Package XL-01 and XL-02 must strive to be completed in 2027, one year earlier than planned.

Mr. Cuong noted that in 2025, the project was allocated 1,800 billion VND but only disbursed nearly 50%, requiring speeding up construction to complete the capital plan. The authorities of the four related wards must hand over the entire site in November, at the same time review the planning along the route and prepare connecting infrastructure.

In addition, the city has approved a compensation and resettlement project for Van Thanh canal worth over VND6,300 billion, affecting over 1,000 households. The project will apply experience from Xuyen Tam canal to speed up implementation, improve the environment and urban beautification.

The two packages XL-01 and XL-02 have a total investment of about 2,370 billion VND. Of which, package XL-01 is worth more than 1,160 billion VND, with an implementation time of about 950 days, and is undertaken by the joint venture Trungnam E&C - Construction 68 - Nga Hai - Hai Duong Embankment and Rural Development. Package XL-02, worth 1,210 billion VND, is constructed by the joint venture Dai A Chau - Construction No. 5 - Thu Duc 1 Centrifugal Concrete - DNT.
