Ho Chi Minh City becomes the first "Cinema City" of Southeast Asia

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) has welcomed 58 new member cities, including Ho Chi Minh City.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) has welcomed 58 new member cities, including Ho Chi Minh City.

According to the UNESCO website, on the occasion of World Cities Day 2025, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay announced 58 cities as new members of UCCN.

Cities are recognized for their commitment to supporting innovation as a driver for sustainable urban development. They also demonstrate to UCCN their own experience in building vibrant and sustainable communities.

Among the 58 new member cities, Ho Chi Minh City is the City of Cinema. Some other cities: Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah is the City of Gastronomy ; Andenne is the City of Handicrafts and Folk Arts; Bistrita is the City of Architecture; Bobo-Dioulasso is the City of Handicrafts and Folk Arts; Celje is the City of Literature…

Thus, UCCN now has 408 cities in more than 100 countries. This is also the first time that UCNN welcomes architectural cities - a new field in addition to the seven existing fields: Crafts and folk arts, design, cinema, gastronomy, literature, traditional arts and music .

"UNESCO Creative Cities demonstrate that culture and creative industries can be concrete drivers of development. By welcoming 58 new cities, we are strengthening a network where creativity supports local initiatives, attracts investment and promotes social cohesion," said Audrey Azoulay.

Since its establishment in 2004, UCCN has actively promoted people-centered urban living and governance, providing a variety of cultural and creative activities for its residents.

Ho Chi Minh City has submitted its application to UNESCO since March 3. Ho Chi Minh City's successful entry into the UNESCO Cinematography Association will contribute to becoming a place connecting Vietnamese cinema with international cinema, effectively and responsibly contributing to the overall development of regional cinema.

Ho Chi Minh City officially becomes the city of cinema

On October 31, the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City issued a statement announcing that UNESCO officially recognized Ho Chi Minh City as a Global Creative City in the field of cinema. Ho Chi Minh City became a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), the first UCCN cinema city in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

The cinema sector is home to 935 businesses, with 9,294 employees, generating a revenue of 500 million USD, contributing 0.43% of GRDP. The city has 10 cinema systems, 52 cinema complexes, 295 screening rooms and 184 creative spaces for professional art practice; in addition, there are cultural spaces serving the needs of the community in residential areas, contributing to improving the cultural and spiritual life of the community.

When becoming the UCCN Cinema City, Ho Chi Minh City will become a place connecting Vietnamese cinema with international cinema, contributing effectively and responsibly to the common development of regional cinema.

This is the driving force for the city to effectively implement professional and modern cinema development projects; enhance training and exchange of experts, supplement high-quality human resources; continue cinema events, turn the Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival (HIFF) into an annual cinema event, and strive to affirm the position and prestige of domestic and international cinema.

The City People's Committee has issued the Project "Strategy for developing Ho Chi Minh City's cultural industry to 2030" in 8 fields: Cinema, performing arts, fine arts, photography, exhibitions, advertising, cultural tourism, fashion. The Project implementation plan was issued in September 2024.

Becoming a creative city in the field of cinema will promote the development of the cultural industry, artistic creativity to nurture a healthy social spiritual life, in harmony with the international community, economic and social development is the focus in the coming period. Strengthening the promotion and connection of tourism development, together with cultural industries, is expected to contribute 7.2% of GRDP in 2030 to create more new jobs and livelihoods for urban residents.

Ho Chi Minh City and the French Embassy in Vietnam have cooperated to develop the publication "Filming Guide in Ho Chi Minh City" with the goal of not only being a useful professional document for film producers, but also demonstrating the city's commitment to developing cinema in association with the cultural industry development strategy, in line with the Vietnam Cinema Development Strategy to 2030, vision to 2045; building Ho Chi Minh City into a creative urban area in the field of cinema, a center for production, exchange and international cooperation in cinema arts, aiming to build Ho Chi Minh City into a creative, friendly and unique city.
