Ho Chi Minh City leads in controlling clean livestock slaughter

On June 3 in Hanoi, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development held a conference on animal slaughter control, implementing Directive No. 02/CT-TTg dated January 14, 2023 of the Prime Minister.

According to the report of the Department of Animal Health (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), by May 2023, the country had a total of 463 centralized animal slaughterhouses, but there were still 24,654 small-scale facilities. All centralized facilities have been granted certificates of eligibility for veterinary hygiene and food safety, and have veterinary staff to control slaughtering activities according to regulations.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien suggested that, in order to put an end to small-scale, manual slaughterhouses, localities must actively take action, strictly handle violations, and create conditions for businesses to invest in this field.

To effectively carry out slaughter control work at concentrated animal slaughterhouses with industrial chains, reducing time and personnel for slaughter control, the representative of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ho Chi Minh City proposed that the Department of Animal Health adjust the post-slaughter inspection process for pigs at concentrated animal slaughterhouses with industrial chains, and assign veterinary agencies to proactively monitor the source of pigs brought into the slaughterhouse, prioritize carcass inspection, and head and viscera inspection should only be performed when there are signs of suspected related diseases.
