NTT (5 years old, Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) was once checked by the school to look at the alphabet and number board, only to discover that when one eye was covered, the other eye had difficulty seeing clearly. When his parents took him to the doctor, the doctor diagnosed him with a refractive error, requiring early intervention to prevent his eyes from becoming more severe.
Phong (8 years old, HCMC) wears glasses after an eye examination by a doctor. He has just been diagnosed with refractive error. According to his family, when looking at distant objects, he sees them very blurry, and when he comes into contact with objects that are closest, he has to try to get closer every time he watches TV or reads a book. As the new school year is about to begin, his family has focused on eye health check-ups in the hope that it will help him have less difficulty seeing and studying.
According to Dr. Le Thi Kim Chi - Deputy Head of the Refractive Department, Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital, the cause of refractive errors has not been clearly studied, so experts often call it the factor causing myopia. Currently, the number of people with refractive errors due to the use of electronic devices is increasing, the number of children detected is higher than before, partly because parents are more concerned and take their children to the doctor. At the same time, schools also have annual eye-sight measurement charts for school health check-ups, so children are detected early and taken to the doctor.
According to Dr. Kim Chi, to detect refractive errors in the eyes, it is recommended to take children for examination every 6 months for early intervention to avoid the condition becoming more serious. Currently, Vietnam and the world are aiming to reduce the progression of myopia, preventing the possibility of refractive errors. Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital is also in the process of preparing to implement a myopia control program, children will be given medication to regulate and control myopia, in addition to many other methods, using glasses to slow down the progression of myopia.
“However, the hospital still needs time to prepare this program. When parents realize their child is nearsighted, they are often very concerned about whether there is a way to cure it if they are nearsighted. It is definitely not possible to cure it completely, the only way is to wear glasses. Many children increase their degree quickly, so the nearsightedness control unit will help children control this,” Dr. Kim Chi emphasized.
Children often do not recognize blurred vision and early refractive errors, so they get used to the blurriness without knowing that they are blurred. Therefore, early screening is very important. Children need to be measured at least from 1-2 years old to detect refractive errors and intervene for the child, in order to develop better vision later. Otherwise, the child is likely to have amblyopia in both eyes or one eye.
