Thanks to bold thinking and changing the direction in the locality, in the early 90s, Mr. Su's family in Nga My commune, Phu Binh district (Thai Nguyen province) destroyed ineffective eucalyptus hills to switch to growing fruit trees, bringing higher economic efficiency.

Mr. Nguyen Van Su's family (Dong Hoa hamlet, Nga My commune, Phu Binh district, Thai Nguyen province) is one of the pioneers in growing fruit trees in the locality for more than 30 years. At that time, the economic life of the people of Nga My commune in general and Mr. Su's family in particular was still very difficult. From that situation, Mr. Su and his wife discussed finding a new suitable direction to improve the family's income.

After many sleepless nights, although regretful, the couple decided to destroy the eucalyptus hills that were in their prime to switch to growing fruit trees in the hope of making life less miserable. Initially, Mr. Su and his wife chose to grow tangerines, but to improve the land for growing fruit trees was a difficult and arduous process. Working hard for many days, Mr. Su and his wife diligently carried loads of mud from the pond to create soil for planting trees. Then they diligently planted, cared for, watered, and harvested the trees.

Although the income was good in the first years, gradually this plant degenerated and was no longer effective.

After 11 years, realizing that it was no longer suitable, Mr. Su switched to another job and then in 2014, he returned to growing fruit trees of all kinds such as grapefruit, lychee, apricot, and seedless persimmon. But then he focused mainly on grapefruit trees. In 2017, Mr. Su and his wife bought 4 more sao of land and planted more than 300 guava trees and have maintained it ever since.

Currently, Mr. Su's family has about 7,000 square meters of fruit trees with nearly 500 Taiwanese guava, Dien grapefruit and longan trees. In addition, with the ineffective fruit growing land, Mr. Su and his wife also plant bamboo shoots in their garden, which has now entered its third year and has begun to harvest several hundred kilograms of bamboo shoots.

Mr. Su said that due to the soil and climate conditions of Nga My land, the fruit trees here are very delicious and sweet. "This year, guava is priced at 30,000 VND/kg but the yield is low. Like previous years, the guava crop was good, there were years when we harvested a ton of guava, each day we sold about 200 kg very easily. People who took 5kg, people who took 10kg, just call us and we will pick and bring it to them. This year if the yield is high, we will also get a fair amount," Mr. Su explained.

Along with growing fruit trees, Mr. Su's family also raises bees and white horses to sell meat and make glue. With 50 beehives as present, on average each year Mr. Su's family collects about 150 liters of honey with a selling price of 200,000 VND/liter. The model of growing fruit trees combined with raising livestock has helped Mr. Su's family have a relatively stable income, thanks to which life has become more prosperous than before.

With achievements in production, Mr. Su's family received a certificate of merit for good production and business households from Phu Binh district.

Mr. Dang Van Tho - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Nga My commune said: In Nga My commune, there is about 1 hectare of fruit tree growing area concentrated in 4 hamlets, mainly grapefruit trees. Among them, Mr. Su's family is one of the households with high income from growing fruit trees. Currently, the locality is still orienting people to grow fruit trees according to VietGAP to ensure safety and improve product quality.
