Implementing solutions for sustainable development of green lim forests

Green Lim planted in Ben En National Park.

From 2011 to early 2025, with the State budget and cooperation and sponsorship programs, Ben En National Park has implemented silviculture projects and planted green lim forests. Currently, Ben En National Park has planted 338.25 hectares of green lim. Of which, the cooperation project with Canon Vietnam Group planted 160 hectares, the afforestation project after thinning acacia planted 54.88 hectares, Gaia Nature Conservation Center planted 106.87 hectares to enrich the forest; the remaining area was planted according to the replacement afforestation project and the project "Conservation and development of green lim species" planted by Ben En National Park. The newly planted lim forests are cared for according to technical procedures and grow well.

Along with proactively protecting and developing forest resources, Ben En National Park has focused on preserving and developing native green lim species. In order to have varieties for planting and providing seedlings for units in the region, Ben En National Park staff had to go deep into the forest, find and select natural green lim trees with good growth, about 12 years old or more as parent trees to collect seeds to grow seedlings. Each year, the unit harvests about 300 kg of seeds to grow seedlings, serving to expand the area of green lim planting.

Thanh Hoa has relatively suitable climate and soil conditions for the growth and development of green lim. Green lim is a typical forestry tree, native to Thanh Hoa province. In the province, green lim is mainly distributed in the districts of: Nhu Thanh, Nhu Xuan, Thuong Xuan, Cam Thuy, Ba Thuoc, Thach Thanh, Ha Trung... This is an endangered, precious, rare species, with limited exploitation and use.

Implementing forestry programs and projects, in recent years, our province has focused on directing and implementing many solutions to protect, restore and develop lim forests. In the first months of 2025, localities, units and forest owners in the province have proactively provided training on techniques for planting and caring for green lim; organized households to receive forestry land contracts to prepare the site well; provided materials and "input" seedlings, implemented a plan to plant 350 hectares of pure and mixed green lim, and scattered planting with tree species such as giổi, trầu, luong, and acacia auriculiformis.

As a result, from the beginning of 2025 to now, the whole province has planted more than 170 hectares of green lim forest. From 2018 to April 2025, the whole province has naturally regenerated and planted more than 8,220 hectares of green lim forest, bringing the total area of green lim forest in Thanh Hoa to 28,220 hectares. In general, newly planted lim trees have been cared for, protected, grown and developed well.

"In order to restore and develop green lim forests in the coming time, the Provincial Forest Protection Department has coordinated with the People's Committees of the districts to focus on raising awareness among the people and the community about the economic and environmental value of green lim trees associated with community life. Selecting green lim trees that grow and develop well, meeting the standards for recognition as superior trees for breeding, proactively sourcing seeds for nursery. Mobilizing capital sources to effectively restore and develop green lim forests. Proactively protecting the safety of existing green lim forests. Coordinate with central ministries, branches, and international organizations to call for financial support, technical support for sustainable forest management and forest certification for natural forests, planted forests with green lim, to meet the requirements of the world market and increase the added value of the forestry industry" - Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thai, Head of the Forest Development and Use Department, Forest Protection Department shared.
