The 50 photos on display were carefully selected from a collection of more than 2,000 portraits of Vietnamese Mothers that Mr. Tran Hong - a former soldier of Battalion 2, Regiment 559 of the Truong Son Army, and later Head of the Photo Department of the People's Army Newspaper - had diligently recorded from 1976 to 2020.
The exhibition is divided into three themes: “Mother - Deeply engraved with memories”, “Mother - Everyday moments” and “Pride of Vietnamese Mothers”. The photo group with the theme “Mother - Deeply engraved with memories” mostly consists of portraits or busts, depicting old, lonely women, looking longingly into the void, missing their husbands or children who went to war and never returned.
The exhibition attracted a large audience at home and abroad. (Photo: Nhan Dan Newspaper) |
The photo “Waiting for My Child” - one of the most famous works by artist Tran Hong - depicts the Vietnamese Heroic Mother Nguyen Thi Thu ( Quang Nam ), whose husband and nine biological children were all martyrs. In the photo, Mother Thu sits quietly next to a tray of food with nine sets of bowls, chopsticks and an incense bowl, behind her are the portraits of her children, which has become a symbol of the pain of war and also a sacred symbol of silent, intense patriotism.
Many works such as “Mother has no one left”, “Mother is living in place of her child”, “The medal on Mother’s shirt”… depict simple, small, humble mothers, expressing the terrible pain caused by war. At the same time, it also helps viewers appreciate and be grateful for the silent but great sacrifices of mothers.
Besides the tragic depictions, the exhibition also introduces other Vietnamese Mothers who are leaders and scientists who have made many contributions to the development of the country, or simply images of ordinary women with the noble mission of being wives and mothers such as: the image of female general Nguyen Thi Dinh on the train connecting the North and South in 1976; Associate Professor Dang Bich Ha - wife of General Vo Nguyen Giap; Mother Dinh Thi Giam in Ha Tinh - mother of eight doctoral children; Mother Pgo Xu - the first Ha Nhi ethnic woman to pass the University of Journalism in the 1969-1973 school year...
Journalist and photographer Ha Hong, former Head of the Science and Education Department of Nhan Dan Newspaper, commented: Although depicting the pain of loss, the exhibition does not sow sadness but conveys a positive message of faith, gratitude and aspiration for peace . The exhibition is a silent epic, a place for today's generations, especially the youth, to understand and deeply appreciate the mothers who have devoted their whole lives to the Fatherland.
