Mr. Nguyen Quoc Huy, Deputy Director of the Department of Grassroots Culture, Family and Library, emphasized the great historical significance of the General Election on January 6, 1946, the first democratic event held nationwide, in the context of many areas still at war and being sabotaged by the enemy.
With the principles of universal, equal, direct and secret suffrage, the election was successful, bringing into being the first National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. That victory affirmed the legitimacy and democracy of the new State, opening a period when the country had a unified National Assembly, a constitutional Government, qualified to represent the People in the cause of resistance, nation building and foreign relations.
