Yonhap news agency reported that the South Korean Unification Ministry recently released the latest editions of its annual catalog of key officials in the North Korean government and party.
Specifically, in the 2024 edition, all North Korean organizations (listed in the 2023 edition of South Korea as being in charge of inter-Korean relations) were either deleted or marked as “presumed to have been dissolved.”
“Including the eight agencies that North Korea announced it had disbanded, about 10 organizations in charge of relations with South Korea are believed to have been abolished,” the Unification Ministry official noted.
These organizations include the National Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland (the agency that was in charge of negotiations with South Korea), the Democratic Front for the Unification of Korea, the Council for National Reconciliation, and five other agencies in charge of inter-Korean affairs.
According to Yonhap , North Korea appears to have carried out an organizational reshuffle after itsleader Kim Jong-un defined inter-Korean relations as those between “two hostile countries” and ordered the elimination of agencies handling inter-Korean affairs during a plenary meeting of the party in December last year.
In another development related to North Korea, Reuters news agency reported that at a press conference on December 23, Mr. Yury Ushakov, Assistant to the President of Russia, did not rule out the possibility of North Korean soldiers participating in the parade marking the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War on May 9, 2025 in Moscow.
According to Mr. Ushakov, the leaders of several countries are expected to attend the event and the celebration itself will be “very representative.” In addition to the leaders, the militaries of several countries will also travel to Moscow to participate in the parade, including from Pyongyang.
Russia has sent invitations to many countries to attend the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the official said, without specifying which countries.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made it clear that the list of invitees was “impressive” but that there were no countries unfriendly to Russia.
