Painter Le Ba Dang (1921-2015) left Vietnam for France in 1940. After difficult years in a foreign land, he was accepted to study at the Toulouse School of Fine Arts and graduated in 1948.
For more than half a century of creative work, Le Ba Dang has continuously explored and developed his own style. The artist's creativity is not only a matter of exploring and experimenting with techniques, but also a fusion of art and thought, where he expresses his views on life and the world . His works, regardless of genre or period, carry a message, reflecting a unique artistic vision and philosophy of life.
Mr. Tran Thanh Binh, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Museum, said that the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Museum was honored to receive 236 works and documents and chose to permanently display a part of the collection of works and documents of painter Le Ba Dang. The permanent exhibition of Le Ba Dang Art Space is a continuation of the events introducing the collection of works by painter Le Ba Dang that Mr. and Mrs. Le Tat Luyen and Thuy Khue donated to the Museum of Fine Arts.
The exhibition is divided into three main themes: Space, Color and Emptiness, and Printmaking. Each theme reflects the unique features of his creative style.
With the theme of “Space”, the work of artist Le Ba Dang has surpassed traditional boundaries, creating an art form that combines paintings, sculptures, and reliefs. According to artist Le Ba Dang, in addition to physical space, there exists a philosophical realm - where humans, all things, and the universe blend together in an inseparable relationship.
In the theme of “Color and Emptiness”, inspired by Buddhist philosophy, the artist has created many works that are both symbolic and contain ideas. The hollow statues made of steel, iron or other materials are not only artistic creations but also open up a new perspective on life and the world.

With the theme of “Printed Painting” - hand-painted prints show another outstanding achievement in Le Ba Dang's career, an unlimited creativity of the artist in terms of technique and materials.
“Above all his artistic achievements, what is most admirable about painter Le Ba Dang is his love for his homeland Vietnam. Although he lived and worked in France, his soul always turned towards Vietnam. Many of the works on display today carry the sound of his homeland, the crystallization of the artist’s love and national pride through art,” said Mr. Tran Thanh Binh, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts.
