Xinhua reported that the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China today, December 29, appointed Mr. Dong Jun as Minister of National Defense.
General Dong Jun, 62, has served in all major naval divisions of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).
Before becoming Navy Commander in 2021, Dong Jun served in the North Sea Fleet and East Sea Fleet as well as China's Southern Theater Command.
In recent years, the Chinese Navy has played an important role as the PLA has expanded its diplomatic reach with many port visits to foreign countries.
Dong Jun will replace Li Shangfu, who was dismissed as Defense Minister in October after months of absence.
Dong Jun's appointment could further facilitate high-level military contacts between the US and China after the two countries' defense ministers have not spoken since last November.
