On January 18, Euronews reported that Marvel and Disney producers can "breathe a sigh of relief" when China ended a three-and-a-half-year ban on all Marvel films in the country.

Coming up, more than three years from 2019, the first Marvel Studios product will be released in theaters in China. Two of the blockbusters that will be "debuted" in the billion-people country are Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, scheduled to be released after the Lunar New Year.

This is the first time Marvel has released its films in the world's second-largest theatrical market since Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019.

Previously banned films in China include Black Widow, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Eternals, Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Previously, Chinese film distributors have not clearly stated the reason for banning Marvel films. However, the media speculated that the reason came from the trade war tensions between the US and China.

Additionally, China's prioritization of its domestic film industry and individual films' censorship violations are also considered important reasons. For example, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder feature scenes with LGBTQ content that are considered inappropriate for Chinese culture.

The upcoming release of Marvel films in Chinese theaters is a huge deal for Marvel Studios. China has long been considered a lucrative market for all studios, including Marvel and Hollywood.

Before Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Avatar: The Way of Water was released in the country of a billion people. Director James Cameron's product is considered a turning point for the Hollywood series and a promise that in the future, Hollywood blockbusters will be present at the Chinese box office.
