Communication to improve self-care knowledge for the elderly

Ha Dong Medical Center (Hanoi) has just coordinated with the People's Committee and Ha Cau Ward Health Station to organize health care communication for nearly 130 elderly people in the ward.

Speaker, MSc. Dr. Le Xuan Nam, Head of Population - Communication and HealthEducation Department, Ha Dong District Medical Center focused on emphasizing the reality of population aging and the issues arising from population aging; the role and position of the elderly in society; some policies of the Party and State towards the elderly. From there, providing knowledge and skills for the elderly to be able to take care of themselves, proactively prevent common diseases: blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, bone and joint diseases, digestive diseases... and implement a diet and rest regimen appropriate to their age and health status.

The elderly in Ha Cau ward currently account for 13.6% of the total population of the ward. In addition to organizing direct communication sessions to contribute to raising the understanding of cadres and members of the elderly about health care knowledge, the role and dedication of the elderly in life to improve the quality of life of the elderly. The Health Station has coordinated with the Health Center and the Elderly Association of the ward to organize periodic health check-ups for 2,324 elderly in the ward. Through the health check-ups, 652 elderly people were found to have diabetes, 1,057 elderly people with high blood pressure, 405 elderly people with diseases related to bones and joints, etc.

In response to the Action Month for the Elderly in Vietnam in 2024, the Ward Health Station coordinated with the Ward Elderly Association to provide health check-ups for 450 elderly people. Accordingly, the elderly were examined, had their blood pressure, cardiovascular, bone and joint health measured, eyes, ears, nose and throat examined, tested and medicine was dispensed for free. In addition, the elderly were also consulted by the Station's doctors and nurses about chronic diseases to help them control, maintain and improve the quality of life of the elderly in the early detection of dangerous diseases, while also creating conditions for timely and effective treatment.
