Once upon a time, the people of a certain village were often harassed by a monster named Nian. Nian was described as having “sharp teeth, huge claws, and an evil growl.” Nian lived mainly in the forest, but every last night of the year, it would come into the village to harass the people. The people of this village had suffered the destruction of Nian for many years without being able to do anything about it.
Later, a wise old man came and taught the villagers how to deal with the Nian, which was to use loud sounds, fire, and the color red. When Nian came to harass the village, the people here “beat the loudest drums they could, burned every string of firecrackers they had, and dressed themselves in red from head to toe.” When Nian saw this, he was so scared that he ran away and never returned to this village again.
Later, setting off firecrackers, beating drums and wearing red clothes at the end of the year became a custom, gradually forming the custom of celebrating Lunar New Year in China and many other Asian countries.
Nowadays, Lunar New Year is not only one of the festivals that is respected by some Eastern countries, but is also celebrated by people in many countries around the world .
